For some people, liturgy feels warm, profound, and full of meaning. But for others, liturgy can feel… rigid. Like reading a memorized script without heart. So, why are there liturgies that feel too formal or boring?
1. Liturgy Begins with Good Intentions
Liturgy is actually an order of worship designed to guide the congregation in worshiping God in an orderly and biblical way. From the opening prayer, praise, confession of sins, the Word, to the sending out, everything is arranged so that worship is not done carelessly.
However, over time, when form becomes more prioritized than content, liturgy can lose its “soul.”
2. Rigidity Happens When the Focus Shifts from God to Procedures
Isaiah 29:13 says, “This people draw near with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” God does not reject liturgy, but He rejects worship that is merely formal.
Liturgy becomes rigid when it no longer directs the heart to God, but merely becomes a routine.
3. Not All Liturgies Are the Same; Some Are Alive, Some Are Empty
Some churches develop liturgies that are more interactive, contemporary, or relevant to the congregation’s context. But there are also those who still use the old forms because they want to preserve traditional roots.
What we need to understand: liturgy is not about style, but about the heart. Worship style can be formal or relaxed, but what God seeks is worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24).
4. Rigid for One Person, Can Be Meaningful for Another
What is considered rigid by the younger generation can be very touching for the older generation. For them, rhythm and structure provide a sense of security and sacredness. So, it is also important to look with empathy and not judge immediately.
5. God Cares More About Content Than Form
God does not command us to avoid structure. Even in the Old Testament, worship was full of rules and patterns. But all of these were always directed to bring the human heart back to Him.
Liturgy should be a way, not a barrier, to encounter God.
