Have you ever felt like crying, but held it back because you were afraid of being seen as weak? Many people think that crying is a sign of weakness, yet scientifically, tears actually have great benefits for the body, and spiritually, the Bible shows that Jesus Himself once wept. So why are we often ashamed to cry?
The Science Behind Tears
Tears are not just liquid that comes out when we are sad. There are three types of tears: basal (to moisten the eyes), reflex (to protect from dust or smoke), and emotional (released when we feel sad, moved, or even relieved). According to research, emotional crying can help release stress hormones and increase endorphins, which make us feel calmer.
So, crying is the bodyโs natural mechanism for balancing emotions. That is why, after crying, many people feel relieved, as if a burden on the heart has been lifted a little.
Jesus Wept Too
Interestingly, the Bible records a very human moment from Jesus: โJesus wept.โ (John 11:35) when He saw Lazarusโ death and the grief of the family left behind. Even though Jesus knew He would raise Lazarus, He still felt such deep empathy.
This story shows that crying is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of love and care. Even God Himself, full of power, did not hold back His tears.
Why Are We Ashamed to Cry?
Often, culture or mindset leads us to believe that crying is the same as being overly sensitive or immature. Especially for men, there is a stigma that โreal men do not cry.โ Yet suppressing emotions can actually have a harmful impact on mental and physical health.
The Bible itself never forbids crying. On the contrary, the Psalms are full of lament and tears offered to God. Even Revelation 21:4 gives a beautiful promise: โAnd He will wipe away every tear from their eyes…โ
Crying Before God
Crying can become the deepest form of prayer, when words can no longer come out. Psalm 56:8 says, โYou have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in Your bottle.โ This means God values every drop of our tears. Nothing is wasted; even tears that fall in silence are seen by Him.
Conclusion
So, why are we ashamed to cry? Because the world sees it as weakness, yet the Bible and science prove otherwise. Crying is part of our humanity, a way to release emotions, and a sign of love. If even Jesus wept, we do not need to be ashamed to cry before God.
