Take a deep breath right now. You can feel it entering your lungs, right? But can you see the air? Of course not. We live, move, and think because of something invisible: oxygen. Interestingly, faith works in a similar way.
We cannot see God with physical eyes, yet we can feel His presence, His impact, and His influence in our lives. Faith, like air, is invisible, but very real.
Science Speaks: Air Is Real, Even Though It Cannot Be Seen
Scientifically, air consists of a mixture of gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Although it is not visible to the human eye, air can be proven to exist in many ways:
- We can feel it when the wind blows.
- We see its effects when leaves move, balloons inflate, or airplanes can fly.
- We know we need it, without air we can only survive for a few minutes.
Things we cannot see can be extremely vital. And precisely because they are vital, we often take them for granted, even though our lives depend on them so much.
Faith Is Like That Too: Invisible, Yet Life-Giving
Hebrews 11:1 says:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Faith is not merely a feeling or empty hope. Faith is a deep conviction about things that cannot be explained visually, but can be felt spiritually and proven through experience.
Just like air, faith gives life. It gives direction, hope, and strength to keep walking in the midst of uncertainty.
Jesus Himself said to Thomas:
“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)
Air and Faith: Both Are Needed for Life
Without air, our bodies grow weak and slowly die. Without faith, our souls lose direction and hope. Even when life seems fine, we still need faith to realize that not everything happens by chance.
Air works automatically—we do not need to think hard to breathe. But we still need to care for our environment and our health so we can keep breathing it. In the same way, faith needs to be nurtured through prayer, the Word, and a personal relationship with God.
Conclusion: Believe Even When You Cannot See
So, why can’t we see air but can breathe it? Because not everything that is truly important has to be visible. In fact, the most important things are often invisible. Air is a clear example that God created unseen things to sustain life.
And faith is our response to His love, which is not always visible either, but can be felt every day.
