Why Do We Always Seek God’s Voice Amidst Chaos?

Have you ever felt less diligent in praying when everything is going well, but suddenly become more โ€œspiritualโ€ when your life feels chaotic?

Why is it that when the storm comes, we start seeking God’s voice more seriously? Even though before, when life was peaceful, we seemed to forget that God is always speaking.

Chaos Reveals Our Limitations

When everything runs smoothly, we feel capable of managing everything. But once problems arise, we realize: we do not fully control this life. Chaos opens our eyes to the fact that our strength has limits. At that point, we begin to ask, “God, where are You?”

Maybe it’s not because God just started speaking, but because we are only willing to listen now.

God Indeed Whispers Through Chaos

In 1 Kings 19:11-12, Elijah sought God through a great wind, an earthquake, and fire. But God actually spoke through a gentle whisper. Ironically, we often fail to catch that gentle voice when everything is noisy and busy.

Ironically, it is precisely in the midst of chaos, when we feel broken and alone, that God’s voice becomes more real, because finally we are silent and listening.

It Does Not Mean God Only Speaks When We Are Broken

God does not wait for us to fall before He speaks. His voice is always there, but we are more sensitive when we are fragile. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted.” Chaos makes our hearts more open, more honest, more thirsty for answers.

And precisely in the midst of chaos, God’s voice feels like the only voice that brings peace. Perhaps because only God does not panic, does not change, and does not leave.

Learning to Hear in Peace, Not Just in Noise

This reflection is not an invitation to suffer in order to be more spiritual, but an invitation to learn to recognize God’s voice not only in the midst of chaos. We can train that sensitivity starting now, through silence, prayer, and the Word, before the storm comes.

Because God’s voice is not always loud, but always present.
