Believing in God often sounds like an easy thing. But in reality, many Christians, even those who have believed for a long time, have experienced difficult times to keep believing. Why does this happen? Is it a lack of faith? Or is there something deeper than that?
1. Wounds from past experiences
One of the most common reasons someone struggles to believe is because of unhealed wounds. When someone has been disappointed, abandoned, or feels their prayers have not been answered, they begin to wonder: “If God is good, why does this happen?” From here doubt arises. The psalmist also experienced this struggle: “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever?” (Psalm 13:2). But notice, the psalmist still comes to God, even in disappointment.
2. Logical thoughts that keep questioning
In a modern world filled with knowledge and information, many people begin to think: “Is faith logical?” Often, because not everything can be explained by human logic, belief in God becomes unclear. In fact, faith is not the opposite of logic, but trust beyond our limited understanding. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
3. Fear of being disappointed again
Many people are unaware that the reason they find it hard to believe is because they are afraid to hope. They fear that if they fully trust God, and then things do not go as they expect, they will be heartbroken. But precisely in full surrender, we learn that God is not only trustworthy but also faithful in His perfect way.
4. A heart that does not truly know God
Sometimes people find it hard to believe because they actually do not know who God is. We cannot trust someone we do not know. Therefore, it is very important to build a personal relationship with God through prayer, the Word, and His presence every day.
John 17:3 states, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
5. Environments that distance us from faith
Environment also has a great influence. When someone is surrounded by doubt, ridicule, or values that contradict the Word of God, the faith that was once strong can weaken. That is why it is important to associate with people who build up our faith, as stated in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Believing does not mean never doubting
God is not angry when we experience doubt. In fact, Jesus once said to a father whose son was possessed: “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Then the father cried out, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’ (Mark 9:23-24). We may come to God honestly and bring all our uncertainties to Him.
Conclusion
Believing in God is a journey full of dynamics. Sometimes up, sometimes down. But the most important thing is that we continue to come to God, maintain a personal relationship with Him, and continue to rely on His grace, not on the strength of our own faith. Because in the end, it is not how great our faith is, but in whom we believe.
