This question has been a subject of debate since the early church was established. Many people ask, “If Jesus is called the Son of God, does that mean He is inferior to the Father?” Or “If Jesus prays to the Father, does that mean He is not God?” Let us discuss this with an open heart, based on the Bible, not human opinions.
Jesus: Son, but also God
In John 1:1-2 it is written, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” This verse clearly shows that the Word (Jesus) is not a creation, but eternal with God, and even is God Himself.
Then in John 1:14 it says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…” So, Jesus is not merely a messenger, but is God Himself who became human. This is the extraordinary mystery of the incarnation: God came to meet humanity in human form.
Why does Jesus pray to the Father?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. If Jesus is God, why does He pray to the Father? The answer lies in the understanding that Jesus is truly God, but also truly human (Philippians 2:6-8). When He came into the world, He humbled Himself and took on the form of a human. As a true human, Jesus demonstrated a life fully dependent on the Father, setting an example for all of us.
In John 17:1, Jesus prays, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” This does not mean Jesus is inferior, but shows the loving relationship between the Persons of the one God. Jesus’ prayer is an expression of loving communication between the Son and the Father.
Equal but different roles
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one in essence, yet have different roles. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus says, “Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The word “name” here is singular, indicating one divinity, but with three Persons.
Philippians 2:6-7 affirms that Jesus, “who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing…” This means, His equality with the Father did not disappear, but He willingly humbled Himself to save us.
Conclusion: Jesus is God equal with the Father
Jesus is not inferior to the Father. He is one with the Father in divinity (John 10:30: “I and the Father are one.”), yet in the plan of salvation, He takes the role of the obedient Son. This does not diminish His divinity, but rather shows His extraordinary love.
Our faith in Jesus is not based on His status as a prophet or teacher, but as the true God who became human, lived, died, and rose again for us.
Let us not confuse the difference in roles with a difference in essence. Jesus is equal with the Father, and therefore we can trust that the salvation He offers is perfect and eternal.
