Worshiping When You Don’t Understand

There are times when life feels so confusing. We pray, we believe, but what comes are storms, silence, and uncertainty. At such points, worship can feel like an act that goes against logic. Why should we worship God when circumstances don’t make sense?

The answer lies in the attitude of the heart, not in the situation. Worshiping when you don’t understand does not mean denying reality, but rather choosing to believe even when there is no answer. Like Job, who, even after losing everything, could still say, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” (Job 1:21). He did not worship because everything was good, but because he knew who was worthy to be worshiped.

Worship is not merely a response to good things, but a declaration of faith that God remains God, even when life does not go according to plan. In 2 Chronicles 20:21, the army of Judah sang praises even before the victory came. They prioritized worship, and God acted.

Jesus Himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane, expressed surrender in the deepest worship. He said, “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). In the midst of the suffering He knew was coming, He still worshiped in obedience.

When we worship in the midst of not understanding, we are actually declaring that our faith does not depend on circumstances. We believe that God has a plan greater than our limited understanding. In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are reminded to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding.

Worshiping amid uncertainty is a bold step of faith. It is there that we often find peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7), because our hearts are filled with the unshakable presence of God.

If today you are in a difficult season and do not know why all this is happening, choose to keep worshiping. Not because you understand, but because you believe. For in worship, you not only lift your voice but also surrender your burdens. And there God comes with His strength and comfort.
