If God Is Good, Why Is There Hell?

This question often arises, even from believers themselves: If God is All-Loving and full of mercy, why is there hell? Isn’t hell too terrifying to be created by a loving God?

To answer this, we need to understand God’s nature as a whole. God is indeed All-Loving (1 John 4:8), but He is also just and righteous (Psalm 89:15). God’s love and justice do not cancel each other out but go hand in hand.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

This verse shows two balanced sides: the wages of sin and the gift of eternal life. God does not delight in punishing humans. He gives a choice. Even before humans are punished, God first provides a way of salvation through Jesus.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise… He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

Hell was not a place prepared for humans from the beginning. In Matthew 25:41 it is mentioned that hell was prepared “for the devil and his angels.” But humans are given free will. We have the choice to accept or reject God’s grace. Hell is the consequence of human free choice to reject God.

Imagine if God did not judge evil. Could we still call Him just? If murderers, rapists, and liars were never judged, justice would be empty. Hell is part of God’s holy justice, a place where evil is no longer tolerated.

But more importantly, God does not want anyone to go there. That is why He was willing to send His own Son to die bearing our sins. God provides salvation, but He does not force it. True love does not force; true love gives a choice.

So, when we ask, “If God is good, why is there hell?” We must also ask: Have I accepted the way out that God has given from hell itself, which is Jesus Christ?
