When David was old and advanced in years, he made Solomon king over Israel.

He gathered all the leaders of Israel, also the priests and the Levites.

Then the Levites were numbered, from thirty years old and upward; and the number of them, counted one by one, was thirty-eight thousand.

— “Of these, twenty-four thousand are to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; six thousand are to be officers and judges;

four thousand are to be gatekeepers; and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the instruments that I have made for giving praise,” said David.

David also divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Among the Gershonites were Ladan and Shimei.

The sons of Ladan were Jehiel, the chief, and Zetham and Joel, three.

The sons of Shimei were Shelomith, Haziel, and Haran, three; these were the heads of the families of Ladan.

The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah; these were the sons of Shimei, four.

Jahath was the chief and Zizah the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family with one duty.

The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses; Aaron was set apart to care for the most holy things, he and his descendants forever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to Him, and to bless in His name forever.

The sons of Moses, the man of God, were reckoned among the tribe of Levi.

The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.

The sons of Gershom were Shebuel, the chief.

The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah, the chief; Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.

The son of Izhar was Shelomith, the chief.

The sons of Hebron were Jeriah, the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

The sons of Uzziel were Micah, the chief, and Isshiah the second.

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.

When Eleazar died, he had no sons, only daughters; and the sons of Kish, their cousins, took them as wives.

The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

These were the sons of Levi according to their families, the heads of their families, as they were registered one by one by name, person by person, from twenty years old and upward, who were to do the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

For David had said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.

And so the Levites need no longer carry the tabernacle and all the vessels used in its service.” —
27
For according to David’s later command, those enrolled from the sons of Levi were those twenty years old and upward. —
28
“Their duty is to assist the sons of Aaron in the service of the house of the LORD, overseeing the courts, the chambers, and the cleansing of all holy things, and to do the work connected with the service of the house of God.
29
They are also to provide the showbread and the fine flour for the grain offering, the unleavened wafers, what is baked on the griddle, what is mixed, and all measures and sizes.
30
Further, they are to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise in the evening,
31
and whenever burnt offerings are presented to the LORD, on the Sabbaths, the new moons, and the appointed feasts, according to the number required by the ordinance concerning them, as a continual duty before the LORD.
32
They shall keep charge of the Tent of Meeting and the sanctuary, and shall serve the sons of Aaron, their brothers, in the service of the house of the LORD.”

- Arranging daily worship, the Sabbath, new moons, and feasts
- Serving the priests descended from Aaron
