1 Chronicles 24 – Priests Divided into Divisions

1
These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

2
But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

3
David, together with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their offices in the service of worship.

4
And it was found that among the descendants of Eleazar there were more heads of fathers’ houses than among the descendants of Ithamar; so they were divided thus: sixteen heads of fathers’ houses from the sons of Eleazar, and eight heads of fathers’ houses from the sons of Ithamar.

5
They were divided by lot, without distinction, for there were “holy leaders” and “leaders of God,” both among the descendants of Eleazar and among the descendants of Ithamar.

6
And Shemaiah son of Nethanel, the scribe, a Levite, recorded their names before the king, before the officials, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and before the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and of the Levites; one father’s house being taken from Eleazar, and likewise one from Ithamar.

7
The first lot fell to Jehoiarib; the second to Jedaiah;

8
the third to Harim; the fourth to Seorim;

9
the fifth to Malchijah; the sixth to Mijamin;

10
the seventh to Hakkoz; the eighth to Abijah;

11
the ninth to Jeshua; the tenth to Shecaniah;

12
the eleventh to Eliashib; the twelfth to Jakim;

13
the thirteenth to Huppah; the fourteenth to Jeshebeab;

14
the fifteenth to Bilgah; the sixteenth to Immer;

15
the seventeenth to Hezir; the eighteenth to Happizzez;

16
the nineteenth to Pethahiah; the twentieth to Jehezkel;

17
the twenty-first to Jachin; the twenty-second to Gamul;

18
the twenty-third to Delaiah; the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

19
This was their order of service when they entered the house of the LORD, according to the ordinance given to them through Aaron their father, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

20
And for the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah;

21
of Rehabiah: Isshiah, the chief;

22
of the Izharites: Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.

23
The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

24
The son of Uzziel was Micah; and from the sons of Micah was Shamir.

25
The brother of Micah was Isshiah; and from the sons of Isshiah was Zechariah.

26
The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi, and also the sons of Jaaziah his son.

27
The sons of Merari by Jaaziah his son were Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.

28
Of Mahli came Eleazar; and he had no sons.

29
Of Kish: the son of Kish, Jerahmeel.

30
The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of Levi according to their clans.

31
These also, like their brothers the sons of Aaron, cast lots in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the clans, the priests and the Levites. The head of a clan was equal to his younger brother.

👑🛕📜 Summary of 1 Chronicles 24 – The Division of the Duties of the Priests Descended from Aaron

1 Chronicles 24 speaks about the arrangement of the priests’ duties from the descendants of Aaron, who were to serve in the house of God. David, together with the priests Zadok and Ahimelech, established a system of ordered rotation of service fairly and in good order, so that worship might proceed properly. This is a reflection of organized service, reverent toward God, and centered on holiness.

📌 1. The Two Priestly Branches: Eleazar and Ithamar (verses 1–6)
➡️ Of Aaron’s four sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar had descendants
➡️ The priests in David’s time came from these two lines of descent
➡️ Because Eleazar’s descendants were more numerous, they received 16 divisions, and Ithamar 8 divisions
➡️ The assignment was made by lot before the king and the priests — showing divine justice

🎯 God values structure and order in His service — everyone receives a share according to their calling.

📌 2. The List of the 24 Priestly Divisions (verses 7–19)
➡️ There were 24 priestly divisions, each serving in turn
➡️ The names of the division leaders are recorded — beginning with Jehoiarib, Jedaiah, Harim… and ending with Maaziah
➡️ This system ensured that daily, weekly, and yearly worship continued consistently in the house of God

🎯 Service must not be disorderly — God is worthy to receive worship that is orderly and faithful.

📌 3. Additional Notes about the Priests and the Levites (verses 20–31)
➡️ David also recorded the groups of Levites from the tribes of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, along with their descendants
➡️ They were also chosen by lot according to their ancestral houses and the number of sons
➡️ All was done with full reverence, not carelessly — both the old and the young took part in the lot

🎯 Every part in the service of God, great or small, has equal honor and value in God’s sight.

📖 Main Teaching

  • Spiritual service needs to be orderly, structured, and not careless
  • Each priest received a set time and responsibility — none is more important than another
  • Justice and the casting of lots show that the Lord determines each servant’s portion
  • Service to God is handed down across generations and must be managed wisely
  • Tasks in worship are an honor, not a burden

Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

➡️ Each company of priests symbolizes the body of Christ — each has a unique role

📖 1 Peter 2:5
“You also, as living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house…”
➡️ The priests are a shadow of all believers who serve God today

📖 Romans 12:4–6
“We have different gifts according to the grace given to us.”
➡️ Like the priests, we too are given our own ministry and time to serve

📖 Colossians 3:23
“Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as for the Lord.”
➡️ Serving the Lord — whether in worship, music, or law — must be done with a heart full of reverence
