Now concerning the Israelites: these are the chiefs of the fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went month by month throughout the year. Each division numbered twenty-four thousand.

Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

He was of the sons of Perez, and he was chief of all the commanders for the first month.

Over the division of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and Mikloth was the leader of his division, which numbered twenty-four thousand.

The third commander for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the chief priest, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

This Benaiah was one of the thirty mighty men and had charge over the thirty, but Amizabad his son was in command of his division.

The fourth for the fourth month was Asahel, Joab’s brother; and after him his son Zebadiah, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The fifth for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite, the commander, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The sixth for the sixth month was Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The seventh for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The eighth for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The ninth for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjaminites, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The tenth for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahites, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The eleventh for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The twelfth for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel’s line, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

Over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zichri was chief; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah;

for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron’s descendants, Zadok;

for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael;

for the tribe of Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for the tribe of Naphtali, Jeremoth son of Azriel;

for the sons of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah;

for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for the tribe of Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner;

for the tribe of Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

David did not count those twenty years old and under, because the LORD had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven.

Indeed, Joab son of Zeruiah had begun to count, but he did not finish, because wrath came upon Israel on account of this matter; therefore the number was not entered in the book of the chronicles of King David.

Over the king’s storehouses was Azmaveth son of Adiel, and over the storehouses in the fields, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers was Jonathan son of Uzziah.

Over those who worked the fields and tilled the soil was Ezri son of Chelub.

Over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite. Over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite.

Over the cattle that grazed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; over the cattle in the valleys was Shaphat son of Adlai.

Over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were overseers of King David’s property.

Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons.

Ahithophel was the king’s counselor; Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.

After Ahithophel came Jehoiada son of Benaiah and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army.
