1 Chronicles 26 – Gatekeepers and Other Levite Officials

1

As for the divisions of the gatekeepers: from the Korahites there was Meshelemiah son of Kore, of the descendants of Ebiasaph.

2

Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

3

Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, and Eliehoenai the seventh.

4

Obed-Edom had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth,

5

Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth; for God had blessed him.

6

To Shemaiah his son were born sons who ruled over their fathers’ houses, for they were mighty men of valor.

7

The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, and his brothers Elihu and Semachiah, mighty men of valor.

8

All these were descendants of Obed-Edom, they and their sons and their brothers, able men fit for the service, sixty-two in all from Obed-Edom.

9

Meshelemiah had eighteen sons and brothers, mighty men of valor.

10

Hosah, of the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief, for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him chief,

11

Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth. All the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.

12

These divisions of the gatekeepers, according to the heads of families, had duties for ministering in the house of the LORD, just as their brothers had.

13

They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, the small as well as the great.

14

The lot for the east gate fell to Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and his lot came out for the north gate.

15

To Obed-Edom fell the south gate, and to his sons the storehouse.

16

To Shuppim and Hosah fell the west gate, with the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending highway. One guard was set beside another.

17

On the east there were six each day, on the north four each day, on the south four each day, and at the storehouse two and two;

18

at Parbar on the west, four at the highway and two at Parbar.

19

These were the divisions of the gatekeepers among the Korahites and the sons of Merari.

20
The Levites, their brethren, were over the treasuries of the house of God and over the treasuries of the dedicated things;

21
The sons of Ladan, the descendants of Gershon through Ladan, had Jehiel as chief of the fathers’ houses.

22
The sons of Jehiel, Zetham and Joel his brother, were over the treasuries of the house of the LORD.

23
Of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites,

24
Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler over the treasuries.

25
His brethren through Eliezer were Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.

26
This Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasuries of the dedicated things, which King David, and the heads of fathers’ houses, the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and the commanders, had dedicated.

27
They dedicated some of the spoil won in battle to repair the house of the LORD.

28
Also all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah had dedicated; all the dedicated things were under the care of Shelomith and his brethren.

29
Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were appointed for the outward business over Israel, as officers and judges.

30
Of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valor, one thousand seven hundred in number, had charge of the affairs of Israel west of the Jordan in all the work of the LORD and in the service of the king.

31
Of the Hebronites, Jerijah was chief. As for the Hebronites, according to their generations and fathers’ houses, in the fortieth year of the reign of David inquiry was made concerning them, and there were found among them mighty men of valor at Jazer of Gilead.

32
And his brethren, men of valor, were two thousand seven hundred chief fathers’ houses. King David appointed them over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king.

🛡️🛕📜 Summary of 1 Chronicles 26 – Gatekeepers and Keepers of the Treasures of the House of God

1 Chronicles 26 continues the organization of service in the House of God by King David, especially concerning the gatekeepers, treasurers, and administrators of public affairs. Though their duties may seem “practical” or “physical,” this chapter shows that every part of service — whether spiritual or logistical — is equally precious before God, so long as it is done faithfully and in holiness.

📌 1. Gatekeepers: Duties and Families (verses 1–19)
➡️ The gatekeepers came from the descendants of Korah and Merari
➡️ Meshelemiah and Obed-Edom and their sons were appointed as gatekeepers of the house of God
➡️ Obed-Edom, who had earlier welcomed the ark of God into his house (1 Chr 13:14), was blessed with strong and capable sons
➡️ They were assigned by lot to the gates they were to guard: East, West, South, North, the Storehouse, and the Court Hall

🎯 The ministry of guarding is a symbol of spiritual oversight — preserving holiness, order, and the safety of worship.

📌 2. Stewards and Treasurers of God’s Possessions (verses 20–28)
➡️ Some Levites served as treasurers of the house of God and managers of the offerings
➡️ They kept the holy things that had been consecrated by David, Samuel, Saul, Abner, and Joab
➡️ All spoils of war and offerings were stored and used for the maintenance of the house of God

🎯 Spiritual finances must be handled honestly, orderly, and responsibly — for this is part of holy service.

📌 3. Administrators of Civil Affairs and Judgment (verses 29–32)
➡️ Levites were also appointed as administrators outside the house of God, including civil and legal matters
➡️ They became overseers of the tribes, officials, and judges outside Jerusalem, serving in “all matters of God and the king”
➡️ This shows that Levitical service reached into the life of the community, not only the altar

🎯 God’s servants should also be a light and uphold justice in the midst of society.

📖 Main Teaching

  • All service — whether spiritual, logistical, legal, or security-related — is important in the Kingdom of God
  • The duty of the “gatekeepers” reflects responsibility for guarding the holiness and order of worship
  • Treasurers and managers of God’s assets must be honest and godly
  • The Lord blesses those who are faithful in practical duties, like Obed-Edom
  • Servants of God are also responsible for the community and civil justice
