Then Hannah prayed, saying:
My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted by the LORD; my mouth mocks my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.

There is none holy like the LORD, for there is none besides You, and there is no rock like our God.

Do not keep speaking proudly; let no arrogance come from your mouth. For the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him deeds are weighed.

The bow of the mighty is broken, but those who stumbled are girded with strength.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry before now may rest. Even the barren has borne seven children, but she who had many children has grown feeble.

The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.

Those who contend with the LORD shall be shattered; against them He will thunder in the heavens. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; He will give strength to His king and exalt the horn of His anointed.

Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy became a servant of the LORD under the care of the priest Eli.

Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they did not regard the LORD,

or the priests’ portion of the people. Whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, while the meat was being boiled, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand
14
and thrust it into the pan, or into the kettle, or into the cauldron, or into the pot. Whatever the fork brought up, the priest would take for himself. Thus they treated all the Israelites who came there, to Shiloh.
15
Even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the one who was offering the sacrifice: Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you, only raw meat.
16
If the man answered him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take for yourself whatever you wish,” then he would say to the man: You must give it now; if not, I will take it by force.
17
Thus the sin of the two young men was very great before the LORD, for they despised the offering to the LORD.
18
Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD; he was still a child, wearing a linen ephod.
19
Each year his mother made him a little robe and brought it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
20
Then Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you offspring from this woman in place of the one she gave to the LORD.” After that they went back to their home.
21
And the LORD attended to Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the young Samuel grew up before the LORD.

Now Eli was very old. When he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and that they lay with the women who served at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

he said to them: Why do you do such things, so that I hear from all this people about your evil deeds?
24
No, my sons, it is not a good report that I hear, that you are causing the people of the LORD to transgress.
25
If one person sins against another, God will judge him; but if someone sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him? But they did not listen to their father’s words, because the LORD intended to put them to death.
26
But the young Samuel kept growing, and was more and more favored, both before the LORD and before people.
27
A man of God came to Eli and said to him: Thus says the LORD: Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your ancestors, when they were still in Egypt and subject to Pharaoh’s house?
28
And I have chosen him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, that he may offer on my altar, burn incense, and wear the ephod before me; and I gave to your house all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel.
29
Why then do you look greedily on my sacrifice and my offering, which I commanded, and why do you honor your sons more than me, while you fatten yourselves with the best of every offering of my people Israel?
30
Therefore — says the LORD, the God of Israel — I indeed said: Your house and your family shall walk before me forever; but now — says the LORD —: Far be it from me! For those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
31
Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your family, so that there will not be an old man in your house.
32
Then you will look with hostile eyes on all the good that I will do for Israel, and in your house there will never again be an old man.
33
Yet one of yours whom I do not cut off from my altar will consume your eyes and grieve your soul; and all the increase of your house shall die by the sword of your enemies.
34
And this shall be the sign to you: what will happen to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas; on the same day both of them shall die.
35
And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will act according to my heart and my soul, and I will establish for him a sure house, so that he will always walk before my anointed one.
36
Then whoever is left alive from your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and will say: Please assign me to one of the priestly divisions, that I may eat a piece of bread.
