Then David departed from there and fled to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men.
3
From there David went to Mizpah of Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay with you, until I know what God will do for me.”
4
So he brought them before the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.
5
But Gad the prophet said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered, Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the hill, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants standing about him.

Then Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds,

that all of you have conspired against me, and no one has told me when my son made a covenant with the son of Jesse? None of you is concerned for me or tells me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.”

Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
10
He inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, the priest, and all his father’s house, the priests who were at Nob; and they all came to the king.
12
Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub!” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.”
13
Then Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you gave him bread and a sword, and inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?”
14
Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house?”
15
Is this not the first time I have inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king put such a charge against his servant, nor against all my father’s house; for your servant knows nothing of all this, whether little or great.”
16
But the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.”
17
Then the king said to the guard who stood by him, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
18
Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and on that day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.
19
And Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
20
But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.
21
And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.
22
Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am the cause of the death of all the persons of your father’s house.
23
Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life seeks my life also. With me you shall be safe.”

1 Samuel 22 presents two sharply contrasting sides: David building a community while in flight, and Saul growing increasingly cruel and paranoid, killing the people of God. In the midst of pressure and betrayal, David begins to become a leader of the marginalized, while Saul sinks further into fear and hatred, even toward the priests.
📌 1. David in the Cave of Adullam (verses 1–2)

➡️ Saul heard of David’s whereabouts and became suspicious of everyone, even his own servants
➡️ He accused everyone of plotting with him, including Jonathan
➡️ Saul felt abandoned and lost emotional and spiritual control
🎯 Unhealed fear and envy can turn into violence and slaughter.
📌 4. Doeg Betrays Ahimelech (verses 9–10)
➡️ Doeg the Edomite reported to Saul that Priest Ahimelech had helped David (chapter 21)
➡️ He mentioned the giving of bread and Goliath’s sword
🎯 A traitor often keeps information to use at the most evil time.
📌 5. Saul Slaughters the Priests (verses 11–19)
➡️ Saul summoned Ahimelech and the priests before him
➡️ Ahimelech explained that he did not know David was fleeing
➡️ Saul put to death all the priests of the Lord—about 85 men, and the whole city of Nob (men, women, children, livestock)
➡️ Only one man escaped: Abiathar, son of Ahimelech
🎯 A ruler who has lost the fear of God will destroy anyone for the sake of his own ego.
📌 6. Abiathar Joins David (verses 20–23)
➡️ Abiathar fled and told David about the slaughter
➡️ David felt guilty because Doeg had been present at that time, and said:
“I am the cause of the death of your whole family.”
➡️ He invited Abiathar to stay with him:
“With me you are safe.”
🎯 A true leader bears guilt and protects those who suffer because of it.

✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
“Remember those who are in prison as though you were suffering with them…”
➡️ David did not forget the victims; he bore Abiathar’s burden.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness…”
➡️ The priests who were killed became martyrs because of their service to David, who was righteous before the Lord.
“Vengeance belongs to Me, says the Lord.”
➡️ David did not repay Doeg at that time, but left vengeance to the Lord.
“If we endure, we will also reign with Him.”
➡️ David was trained in suffering before he finally led Israel.
