Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

And when Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it—he was in Egypt, for he had fled there from before King Solomon—he returned from Egypt.

So they sent and called him, and Jeroboam came with all Israel and said to Rehoboam:

“Your father made our burden heavy; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and the heavy burden that he put on us, and we will serve you.”

But he answered them, “Come back to me after three days.” So the people went away.

Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had stood before Solomon his father while he was alive, saying, “What counsel do you give me to answer this people?”
7
They said to him, “If you are kind to this people, please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”
8
But he ignored the counsel that the elders gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and who stood before him,
9
saying to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the burden that your father put on us’?”
10
Then the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “This is what you should say to the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our burden heavy, but you, make it lighter for us’—this is what you should say to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!

Now therefore, my father laid a heavy burden on you, but I will add to your burden; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”

And King Rehoboam answered them harshly; he ignored the counsel of the elders,
14
and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your burden heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”

So the king did not listen to the people’s request, for this turn of events was from God, that the LORD might fulfill his word, which he had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

After all Israel saw that the king would not listen to their request, the people answered the king:
“What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse!
To your tents, O Israel!
Now look after your own house, O David!”
So all Israel went to their tents,

and Rehoboam reigned only over the Israelites who lived in the cities of Judah.

Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him, and he died. Indeed, King Rehoboam could scarcely mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
