When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he gathered the house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against Israel in order to restore the kingdom to him.

But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, the man of God, saying:

“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying:

Thus says the LORD: You shall not go up or fight against your brothers. Return every man to his house, for I have brought this about.” So they listened to the word of the LORD and turned back from going against Jeroboam.

Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and fortified the cities of Judah.

He fortified Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,

Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,

Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,

Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,

Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, which were in Judah and Benjamin, as fortified cities.

He strengthened the fortified cities and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil, and wine;

and shields and spears in every city. He made them very strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.

The priests and the Levites throughout all Israel came over to him from all their districts.
14
For the Levites left their pasture lands and their possessions and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from serving as priests of the LORD.
15
And he appointed for himself priests for the high places, for the goat-demons, and for the calves that he had made.
16
And from all the tribes of Israel those who set their hearts to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to follow the Levites, to offer sacrifices to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
17
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong for three years, for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.

Rehoboam took Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse, as his wife,

and she bore him these sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.

After her he took Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, as his wife, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.

Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom more than all his wives and concubines — he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22
Rehoboam appointed Abijah, the son of Maacah, as chief, that is, as leader among his brothers, for he intended to make him king.

Therefore he acted wisely and dispersed all his other sons throughout all the territory of Judah and Benjamin, to every fortified city. He gave them abundant provisions and provided them with many wives.
🛡️⛪🤝 Summary of 2 Chronicles 11 – Rehoboam Strengthens Judah and the Priests Flee South
2 Chronicles 11 describes Rehoboam’s response after the kingdom was divided. Instead of immediately attacking Northern Israel, he obeyed the word of the LORD and strengthened the territory of Judah both militarily and spiritually. This chapter also records that the priests and Levites left Jeroboam because of idolatry in the north and moved to Jerusalem. This strengthened the spiritual side of the kingdom of Judah for a time.
📌 1. Rehoboam Is Forbidden to Fight (verses 1–4)
➡️ Rehoboam gathered a large army from Judah and Benjamin to attack Northern Israel again
➡️ But the word of the LORD came through Shemaiah, the prophet of the LORD:
“Do not fight against your brothers… return home, for this thing is from Me.”
➡️ Rehoboam obeyed and canceled his plan for war

➡️ Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and strengthened strategic cities such as Bethlehem, Hebron, Lachish, Adullam, etc.

➡️ He placed strong commanders and strengthened the defenses

➡️ Jeroboam appointed idolatrous priests and set up false places of worship on the high places
➡️ As a result, the priests and the Levites left the territory of Israel and settled in Judah, bringing great spiritual influence
➡️ People from the northern tribes who still were faithful to the Lord also moved to Jerusalem
➡️ Therefore, the kingdom of Judah became strong for three years, because they lived as David and Solomon had lived
