But in the seventh year Jehoiada took courage and made a covenant with the captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Johanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri.

They went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel, and they all came to Jerusalem.

Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king’s son! Let him reign, as the LORD has spoken concerning the sons of David!

This is what you shall do: one third of you, who are coming off duty on the Sabbath, both priests and Levites, shall be gatekeepers;
5
another third shall be at the king’s house, and a third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
6
No one shall enter the house of the LORD except the priests and the Levites who are on duty. They may enter, for they are holy; but all the people shall keep the command of the LORD.
7
The Levites shall surround the king on every side, each with his weapon in his hand; and whoever enters the house shall be put to death. And you shall be with the king whenever he goes out or comes in.”

The Levites and all Judah did exactly as Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each took his men who were coming off duty on the Sabbath, together with those who were coming on duty that day, for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss the divisions.

Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears, shields, and bucklers that had belonged to King David, which were in the house of God.

He stationed all the people, each with his spear in his hand, from the right side to the left side of the house, around the altar and the house, to protect the king.

Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony. They made him king and anointed him, and the people cried out, “Long live the king!”

When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went to the people in the house of the LORD.
13
And she saw the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, with the commanders and the trumpeters beside the king. And all the people of the land rejoiced and blew trumpets, while the singers with their musical instruments led the songs of praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and said, “Treason! Treason!”

But the priest Jehoiada brought out the captains of hundreds, the officers over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out from among the ranks! Whoever follows her must be put to death with the sword!” For the priest had said beforehand, “Do not kill her in the house of the LORD!”

So they seized her. When she came to the entrance of the king’s palace at the Horse Gate, they put her to death there.

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be the people of the LORD.
17
After this all the people went into the house of Baal and tore it down; they broke its altars and its images, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars.

Then Jehoiada placed the oversight of the house of the LORD in the hands of the priests and the Levites, whom David had divided into companies for service in the house of the LORD, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD — as it is written in the Law of Moses — with rejoicing and with song, according to the ordinance of David.

He also stationed gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that no one who was unclean in any way should enter.
20
After this he took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the LORD; they entered the king’s palace through the Upper Gate, and seated the king on the throne of the kingdom.
21
So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword.
