Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.

He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his forefather, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
3
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of David his forefather; and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, the Asherim, the carved images, and the cast images.
4
They tore down the altars of the Baals before him; he broke down the incense altars that were above them; he crushed and pulverized the Asherim, the carved images, and the cast images, and scattered their dust over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

He burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

Also in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, in their surrounding ruins,

he broke down all the altars and the Asherim, crushed all the carved images and pulverized them, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

In the eighteenth year of his reign, after he had finished cleansing the land and the house of the LORD, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah, the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.

So they came to Hilkiah the high priest and delivered to him the money that had been brought into the house of God and that the Levites, the gatekeepers, had collected from Manasseh and Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

They put the money into the hands of the workmen appointed over the house of the LORD; and they, who worked in the house of the LORD, used it to repair and restore the house.
11
They gave it to the carpenters and the builders, so that the craftsmen might buy hewn stone and timber for the beams and for the buildings that the kings of Judah had left to decay.

The men did the work faithfully. The men appointed over them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the sons of Merari, while Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of Kohath, were in charge of all. And all the Levites who were skilled with musical instruments,

he was in charge of the laborers and supervised all the workers in every kind of work. Among the Levites there were some who served as scribes, officials, or gatekeepers.

When they brought out the money that had been taken into the house of the LORD, the priest Hilkiah found the Book of the Law of the LORD, given through Moses.

Then Hilkiah said to Shaphan, the royal secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD!” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

Shaphan brought the book to the king. He also reported to the king, “Everything that was entrusted to your servants, they have done.

They have gathered up all the money found in the house of the LORD and handed it over to the supervisors and the workers.”
18
Shaphan, the royal secretary, also informed the king, “Priest Hilkiah has given me a book,” and Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
19
As soon as the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes.
20
Then the king gave orders to Hilkiah, to Ahikam son of Shaphan, to Abdon son of Micah, to Shaphan the royal secretary, and to Asaiah the king’s servant, saying:

“Go, inquire of the LORD for me and for those who remain in Israel and in Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out on us, because our fathers did not keep the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book!”

So Hilkiah and those whom the king had sent went to the prophetess Huldah, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; she lived in Jerusalem in the new quarter. They spoke to her as they had been instructed.

She answered them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me,

‘Thus says the LORD: I am about to bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, all the curses written in the book that has been read before the king of Judah,
25
because they have forsaken Me and burned offerings to other gods, provoking Me with all the work of their hands; therefore My wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’
26
But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, you shall say this: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the words you have heard:
27
because your heart was moved and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and its inhabitants, and because you humbled yourself before Me, tore your clothes, and wept before Me, I also have heard you, declares the LORD,
28
then indeed I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be laid in your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants.” And they brought back that answer to the king.
29
After this the king commanded that all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem be gathered.
30
Then the king went up to the house of the LORD with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the Levites, and all the people, both great and small. In their hearing he read all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
31
Then the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD, and to keep His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, and to perform the words of the covenant written in that book.
32
He caused all who were in Jerusalem and Benjamin to join in the covenant. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem acted according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
33
Josiah removed all the abominations from all the territories of the children of Israel, and made all who were present in Israel serve the LORD their God. So all his days they did not turn away from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
