Life is a journey full of choices. There are times when we must be still, wait, and do nothing but trust in God. However, there are also times when we must step forward in faith even though the path is not yet clear. True wisdom lies in discerning when it is time to be still and when it is time to move forward.
The Bible teaches, “To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). This means, God has a divine calendar for every season in our lives. The problem is, often we are impatient when God tells us to be still, or we doubt when God tells us to move forward.
The nation of Israel at the edge of the Red Sea is a clear example. When Pharaoh was pursuing them, the people panicked. Moses said, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14). But at the next moment, God said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to move on” (Exodus 14:15). There are times when God wants us to be still and trust, and there are times when God wants us to step forward and obey.
Being still does not mean being passive, but rather calming the heart and waiting for God’s instructions.
That is the time when our faith grows, learning that control is in God’s hands. Stepping forward means responding to God’s call with an act of faith. Obedience without waiting can lead us to missteps, but waiting without obedience can cause us to miss opportunities.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this rhythm. There were times when He stayed to pray all night on the mountain (Luke 6:12), yet there were times when He stepped forward decisively to face the cross in Jerusalem (Luke 9:51). This balance shows that a healthy spiritual life not only knows when to be still but also knows when to move forward.
If you are currently confused about whether to be still or to step forward, ask for wisdom from the Holy Spirit. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” God will not let us miss the right season if we are willing to listen to His voice.
Lord, teach me to discern the time to be still and the time to step forward. Give me a sensitive heart, so that I do not rush ahead by my own strength, and do not delay when You call me to advance. I trust that Your timing is always the best. Amen.
