Every day, we are surrounded by the urge to pursue more: more success, more wealth, more fame, more comfort. The world shapes us to believe that a “successful” life is one filled with achievement and recognition. But in the midst of all this, this question is worth reflecting on honestly: am I chasing the world… or eternity?
Jesus gave a sharp warning in Mark 8:36, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” This is not merely about hell or heaven, but about what we are truly pursuing in this life. Is the purpose of my life aligned with God’s heart, or is it only to build a small kingdom called “myself”?
Chasing the world is exhausting. The world demands more but is never satisfied. Its standards are always changing, and when you finally reach them, you still feel empty. But pursuing God and pursuing eternity brings peace, even if the path is sometimes narrow and unpopular.
Paul once stood at the peak of his religious career. He was respected, highly educated, and powerful. But when he came to know Christ, he wrote very clearly in Philippians 3:7-8, “Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ Jesus my Lord, because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” For Paul, pursuing eternity meant being willing to let go of everything temporary.
Of course, this does not mean we should not work hard or have dreams. But the question is: do all these things draw me closer to God, or make me busier with the world? Am I using my blessings for God’s glory, or simply to enlarge my own name?
Pursuing eternity means living with a purpose that goes beyond this world. We give, forgive, and serve even when no one sees, because we know this life is only temporary. We store up treasure in heaven, not only in our bank accounts. As written in Matthew 6:20, “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
Today, you do not need to feel guilty for having dreams or pursuing goals. But allow the Holy Spirit to ask your heart: “Is the ultimate goal for God, or only for the world?” Because only one thing will last forever: what we do in obedience and love to Christ.
Lord, help me see life from the perspective of eternity. Do not let me get trapped in achievements that are only temporary. Teach me to pursue You above all else, because only with You is my heart truly satisfied. Amen.
