There are seasons in life when we are not only physically tired, but also weary in our hearts. We are tired of being strong, because we have held burdens for too long, pretended to be okay too often, and been asked too many times to “stay encouraged” even when our hearts are broken. Maybe you have said in your heart, “I’m tired… But I have to stay strong.”
But who says you always have to be strong?
God never commanded us to rely on our own strength. Instead, He invites us to come when we are weary. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Not: “Come when you are strong,” but: “Come when you are weary.”
Often we feel we must stay strong for others—for family, ministry, or the people who see us as an example. But God knows our limits. Even Jesus Himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane, was so crushed that He said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). Jesus knows what it is like to reach the point of deepest exhaustion. And in that moment, He did not hide it; He came to the Father.
Exhaustion is not a sign of failed faith. Exhaustion is a sign that we are human, and that we need God. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” In other words, God does not wait for us to become strong before He uses and sustains us. He is present right at our point of weakness.
If today you are exhausted from trying to be strong for everyone, pause for a moment. Take a breath. Come into God’s presence. You do not have to be strong all the time. God is your strength.
Do not be ashamed to cry. Do not feel like a failure because you need rest. True faith is not about always being strong, but about knowing where to lean when you are weak.
Lord, I am tired. I have been trying too long to be strong in my own strength. Today, I come to You. Hold me, sustain me, and teach me to believe that Your love is enough. I do not have to be strong, because You are enough for me. Amen.
