Hear this word that the LORD has spoken concerning you, O house of Israel, concerning the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

“You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

Do two walk together, unless they have agreed?
4
Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from his den if he has taken nothing?

Does a bird fall into a snare on the ground when there is no trap for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground when it has caught nothing?

Is the trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid?
Does disaster come to a city, unless the LORD has done it?

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.

The lion has roared; who will not fear?
The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy?”

Proclaim it in the strongholds in Assyria, and in the strongholds in the land of Egypt, and say: “Assemble yourselves on the mountains around Samaria, and see the great confusion within her, and the oppression in her midst.”

“They do not know how to do right,” says the LORD, “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “An adversary shall surround the land, and he shall bring down your strength from you, and your strongholds shall be plundered!”
12
Thus says the LORD: “As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with only a corner of a couch and a part of a bed.”

“Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,” says the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

“that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions, I will punish the altars of Bethel, and the horns of the altar shall be cut off and fall to the ground.
15
I will strike down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall come to an end,” says the LORD.
📣🧭⚖️ Summary of Amos 3 – Israel Rebuked for Its Privilege & the Prophetic Call
This chapter highlights one important theme: the Lord rebukes His chosen people out of love, not hatred. Because they are close to the Lord, their standard of life must be higher. Amos also affirms his prophetic authority, and declares that judgment is surely coming, because sin cannot remain with holiness.
📌 1. You Alone Have I Known (verses 1–2)
“You alone have I known from all the families of the earth…”
- The Lord reminds Israel that they are a chosen people
- But not so they may feel secure in sin! Rather:
“Therefore I will punish you…”
🎯 Privilege without obedience brings punishment, not protection.
📌 2. The Principle of Cause and Effect (verses 3–6)
“Do two walk together unless they have agreed?”
- Amos uses a logical illustration to explain that God’s judgment does not come suddenly:
A lion does not roar if there is no prey
A trap does not spring without a trigger
A city alarm does not sound without danger
🎯 If God gives a warning, it is because evil truly exists. There is no “smoke without fire.”

“Surely the Lord GOD does nothing unless he reveals his decision to his servants the prophets.”
- God always reveals His plan through the prophets
- Amos defends his prophetic authority:
“The lion has roared—who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken—who will not prophesy?”

“Proclaim it to Ashdod and Egypt: Come and see…”
- Foreign nations are called to witness the social ruin in Samaria
- Violence and injustice fill the palaces of Israel
🎯 Even the nations can see that God’s people have failed to be a light when their lives are unjust.

“An enemy will come and surround this land…”
- The Lord will destroy wealth and luxury gained through oppression
- There will be ruin:
The altar at Bethel (false worship)
The winter house and the summer house (excessive luxury)
Ivory houses and grand houses will vanish

→ Just as in Amos 3, judgment begins with the chosen people.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”
→ A true prophet, like Amos, brings the voice of God, even if it is not popular.
🎯 Amos 3 teaches: closeness to God is both an honor and a responsibility. If it is misused, God does not hesitate to rebuke His people severely.
