Thus says the LORD:
“For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn it back: because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime,
2
I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the strongholds of Kerioth; Moab shall die amid uproar, with shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
3
I will cut off the ruler from its midst, and I will slay all its princes with him,” says the LORD.
4
Thus says the LORD:
“For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn it back: because they have rejected the law of the LORD, and have not kept his statutes, but have been led astray by their false gods, after which their fathers walked,
5
I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

Thus says the LORD:
“For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn it back: because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;
7
they trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth, and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same young woman, so that they profane my holy name;
8
they lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and drink the wine of those who have been fined in the house of their god.
9
Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and who was strong as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.
10
Yet it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite;
11
and I raised up some of your sons as prophets, and some of your young men as Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?” says the LORD.
12
“But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, Do not prophesy!
13
Behold, I will press you down in your place, as a cart presses down when it is full of sheaves.
14
Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his power, nor shall the mighty save his life.
15
He who handles the bow shall not stand, and he who is swift of foot shall not escape, nor shall he who rides the horse save his life.
16
And he who is stout of heart among the mighty shall flee away naked on that day,” says the LORD.
⚖️🔥📉 Summary of Amos 2 – Judgment on Moab, Judah, and Israel: God Demands Justice from His People
After judging the pagan nations in the previous chapter, Amos 2 continues with judgment on Moab, then Judah, and finally Israel itself. Here is the climax: the LORD is even more severe toward His own people because they know the truth yet still live in sin and injustice.
📌 1. Judgment on Moab (verses 1–3)
“For three transgressions of Moab, and for four…”
- Moab was judged because they burned the bones of the king of Edom, an act that showed disrespect for the dead
- This showed hatred that went beyond all bounds
- The Lord would destroy the kingdom and its rulers
🎯 The Lord cares even about how we treat our enemies, even after they have died.
📌 2. Judgment on Judah (verses 4–5)
“Because they have rejected the law of the LORD and have not kept his statutes.”
- Judah, part of God’s people, was judged because it abandoned God’s law
- They followed false idols, handed down from their ancestors
- The fire of the LORD would consume the palaces of Jerusalem
🎯 The greater the light (knowledge of God), the greater the moral responsibility.
📌 3. Judgment on Israel (verses 6–16)
“Because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.”
- The charges against Israel are very detailed and painful:
Exploitation of the poor
Sexual abuse and immorality (verse 7)
Corrupt worship: drinking wine gained by oppression in the sanctuary (verse 8)
Ignoring God’s grace: who had delivered them from Egypt and given prophets (verses 10–11)
Oppressing the Nazirites and prophets (verse 12)
- The Lord warns that judgment will come without escape (verses 13–16):
“I will press you down as a cart loaded with sheaves…”
Even the hero, the archer, and the strong man will not be able to flee
🎯 The Lord will not allow social injustice, corruption, and the misuse of worship to continue — even among His own people.
📖 Main Teaching
- The Lord deals justly with all nations, but He requires more from His own people
- Worship without justice and mercy is an abomination in the sight of God
- Oppressing the poor and the voiceless is a serious sin before God
- Rejected divine truth will bring severe divine judgment
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
“To whom much is given, much will be required.”
→ Judah and Israel knew God’s law, so the judgment on them was heavier.
“But you have dishonored the poor…”
→ Just like Israel, the church today is also vulnerable to social discrimination.
“Woe to you… you neglect the more important matters: justice, mercy, and faithfulness.”
→ Jesus condemned worship without moral life, just as Amos did.
Paul reminds us that the people in the wilderness were punished for disobedience, and this is a warning for us now.
