When Faith Does Not Remove Anxiety
Many people think that having faith means you should not be anxious. But in reality, many believers still struggle with anxiety, even though they pray, read the Bible, and trust in God. Does this mean their faith is weak? Or is there something deeper than just “believe” and “do not fear”?
Jesus Also Felt Fear in Gethsemane
In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experienced tremendous inner pressure until His sweat was like blood (Luke 22:44). He knew exactly the suffering He would face, and He felt afraid. But in the midst of that anxiety, Jesus did not flee from the Father’s will. He said, “Let Your will be done” (Luke 22:42). From this, we learn that anxiety is not a sign that we have lost faith, but rather a part of the human struggle as we continue to strive to obey.
Faith Does Not Remove Emotions, But Gives Direction
Anxiety is a natural response of the body and mind when facing uncertainty. But faith is the decision to hold on to God amid that uncertainty. As written in Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds.” Faith does not demand us to be strong at all times, but provides a safe place when we are weak.
Learning to Walk with God, Not to Be Instantly Freed
Psalm 94:19 says, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” In life, anxiety can come again and again. But it is precisely there that we learn to walk with God every day, relying on Him not just once, but continually. Faith is not an instant solution, but a journey that strengthens.
Anxiety Does Not Cancel Faith, But Becomes Its Place to Grow
When we feel anxious, it does not mean we have failed as believers. It is precisely at that moment that we are invited to come closer to God. Like Peter who began to sink because of the wind and waves, he was still saved because he cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30). God does not judge, but helps.
Faith and anxiety may seem opposite, but in Christ, both can walk together. Not to make life free of problems, but to show that His love and strength are sufficient in all things.
