In modern life, filled with busy schedules, work targets, and family responsibilities, time for God is often pushed aside by other things. However, the Bible shows that the altar is an important place where God’s people build an intimate relationship with Him. The altar is not just a pile of stones, but a symbol of surrender, prayer, and fellowship with God.
Abraham is known as a person who diligently built altars wherever he was (Genesis 12:7-8). The altar symbolizes the awareness that life does not belong to us alone, but belongs to God. Amidst journeys and life changes, Abraham did not forget to honor God first. Likewise with Noah, who after being saved from the flood, the first thing he did was to build an altar and offer sacrifices (Genesis 8:20).
Today, we may no longer build physical altars, but we can build spiritual altars through prayer, the Word, and personal worship. Busyness is not an excuse to neglect the altar. In fact, in the midst of busyness, we need the altar so that our hearts remain focused on God.
Jesus Himself set an example. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up and went out.”
He went to a quiet place and prayed there” (Mark 1:35). Even though surrounded by many people and busy ministry, Jesus still prioritized time with His Father.
Many people feel empty amidst achievements because they do not have a personal altar. Success without an altar will only leave us empty. On the other hand, even though life is full of pressure, an altar makes us strong, calm, and keeps us focused on God.
Building an altar amid busyness does not always have to take long. It can start with a simple prayer upon waking up, reading one chapter of the Word before starting activities, or playing worship songs during the journey. What matters most is a heart that makes room for God amid the routine.
Do not let busyness steal our relationship with God. Remember, the altar is the place where the fire of love for the Lord continues to burn.
Lord, teach me not to be so busy that I forget You. Help me build a personal altar amid all the busyness of life. Let there be a special time each day for me to pray, read Your Word, and worship You, so that I remain strong and close to You. Amen.
