This question often arises when we want to understand God’s justice. Many people say, “A sin is a sin, all are the same in God’s eyes.” But is that really true? Or are there levels of sin according to the Bible?
All Sin Separates Humans from God
First of all, it is true that all sins, whether big or small by human standards, separate humans from God. Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
This means that one small lie or murder both show that we have broken God’s law. In James 2:10 it says, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.”
So, in terms of our relationship with God, all sin is the same because all bring death and require forgiveness.

Another example, 1 Corinthians 6:18 mentions that sexual sin is different because “sin is against one’s own body,” unlike other sins committed outside the body.
God Sees the Heart and Motive
God does not only see outward actions but also sees the intent of the heart. For example, hating someone is said to be as serious as murder (Matthew 5:21-22). This means God judges deeper than just the action.
But this does not mean all sins are identical in God’s eyes, rather that all sin is serious and requires repentance, whether it appears big or small to humans.
