This question often arises because it concerns the eternal destiny of humans: who can enter heaven? Is it God who chooses? Do humans have a role? Or is it a combination of both? To answer this, let us look at it in the light of God’s Word, not from personal assumptions or human philosophy.
God is a Just and Compassionate Judge
The Bible clearly states that God is the only person who determines who enters heaven. He is the All-knowing, Most Holy, and Most Just Judge. Psalm 75:7 says, “God is the Judge: He puts down one and exalts another.”
However, God’s decision is not arbitrary or capricious. He judges according to His holy standards and has also provided the way of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Salvation is Determined by the Response to the Gospel
Jesus said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
This means that God opens the door of heaven to anyone who believes in Jesus. Not based on good deeds, lineage, or a particular religion but faith in Christ. That faith is the human response to God’s love and grace.
God’s Part and Man’s Part
There are two sides to this question:
- God’s Part: God calls, chooses, and provides the way of salvation. He who knows the heart of man and the end of all things (Romans 8:29-30).
- Man’s Part: Man is given free will to respond to that call. John 1:12 says, “But to all who did receive Him, He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”
So, God sets the conditions for salvation, and man chooses whether to believe and follow Jesus or not.
Not Based on Works
Ephesians 2:8-9 emphasizes, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
This means, entering heaven is not about “who is the best,” but “who believes and receives that grace.”
Conclusion: God Determines Based on Our Response to Christ
In the end, God determines who enters heaven. But He has given an open invitation through Jesus, and each person is responsible for their response. We do not enter heaven because we are perfect, but because we know and rely on the perfect Jesus. Therefore, the most important question is not “am I good enough?” but “do I believe in Him?”
