Every year, approaching Christmas, many people are busy with beautiful decorations, twinkling lights, and magnificent Christmas trees. All of these add to the festive atmosphere, but are we aware that Christmas is much bigger than just decorations? Christmas is about redemption. The birth of Jesus is the starting point of God’s plan of salvation for the world.
Christmas is not just about the baby born in the manger, but about the Savior who came to redeem mankind’s sins. In Matthew 1:21, the angel said to Joseph, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” This means the birth of Jesus is not merely a sweet event, but the first step of the redemptive work that will culminate on the cross.
God came in a simple form so that everyone could experience His love. Jesus was not born in a palace, but in a stable, to show that salvation is open to all people, both the small and the great. Luke 2:10-11 records the angel’s message to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” This good news is not only for the esteemed but for the whole world.
Unfortunately, the world often gets caught up in the outward side of Christmas. We are easily fascinated by gifts, celebrations, or decorations, but forget to reflect on the main reason why Jesus came. All the festivity is not wrong, as long as we do not lose focus on His redemptive work. Without the cross and resurrection, Christmas is just an ordinary celebration without eternal meaning.
How do we properly understand Christmas?
- Reflecting on God’s love who willingly came down to the world to redeem us. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
- Making Christmas a moment to be thankful and renew faith. More than just a celebration, Christmas is a time to remember the work of salvation.
- Sharing love with others. The love we receive from Christ should motivate us to care for others, especially those in need.
Christmas is not about decorations that please the eyes, but about a heart that realizes how great Jesus’ sacrifice is for us. Let us welcome Christmas with joy born from gratitude for the redemption He has accomplished.
