In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged the city.

The Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the house of God into his hand. He carried them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court, to bring some of the Israelites, from the royal family and from the nobles,

that is, young men without any defect, handsome in appearance, skilled in all wisdom, knowledgeable and understanding in learning, and able to serve in the king’s palace, so that they might be taught the writing and language of the Chaldeans.

The king assigned them a daily portion from the king’s food and from the wine he drank. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to serve the king.

Among them were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

The chief of the court gave them other names: Daniel he named Belteshazzar, Hananiah he named Shadrach, Mishael he named Meshach, and Azariah he named Abednego.

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine the king drank; so he asked the chief of the court that he might not defile himself.
9
Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief of the court;

but the chief of the court said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and drink, lest he see that you look less healthy than the other young men of your age, and so I would incur guilt because of you before the king.”

Then Daniel said to the attendant whom the chief of the court had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

“Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink;
13
after that compare our appearance with the appearance of the young men who eat the king’s food, and then deal with your servants according to what you see.”
14
So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.
15
At the end of ten days, their appearance was better, and they looked healthier than all the young men who had eaten the king’s food.
16
Then the steward would take away their food and the wine they were to drink, and give them vegetables.
17
To these four young men God gave knowledge and skill in all kinds of writing and wisdom; and Daniel also had understanding in all kinds of visions and dreams.
18
At the end of the time appointed by the king, when they were to be brought in, the chief of the palace officials brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.
19
The king spoke with them; and among them all none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.
20
In every matter requiring wisdom and understanding that the king asked of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and all the wise men in all his kingdom.
21
Daniel remained there until the first year of the reign of Cyrus.

Daniel 1 opens the book with the story of the exile to Babylon, when King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah. In the midst of national defeat, there appears the story of the steadfast faith of young men, especially Daniel and his three friends. They refused to go along with Babylonian culture and chose to live holy before the Lord — and the Lord exalted them.
📌 1. The Exile to Babylon (verses 1–2)
“The Lord gave Jehoiakim… into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar…”
- In the third year of Jehoiakim’s reign, Babylon attacked Jerusalem
- The Lord allowed this defeat as a form of judgment
- Some vessels of the Temple were taken to the Babylonian temple — a symbol of spiritual humiliation

“Choose young men… who are skilled in all wisdom…”
- Nebuchadnezzar wanted to Babylonize the best children of Israel:
Changing their names
Teaching them the language and writing of the Chaldeans
Giving them royal food
- Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were chosen
- Their names were changed to:
Daniel → Belteshazzar
Hananiah → Shadrach
Mishael → Meshach
Azariah → Abednego
🎯 The world tries to change our spiritual identity, but true faith endures.
📌 3. Daniel Refuses the King’s Food (verses 8–16)
“Daniel resolved not to defile himself…”
- Daniel did not want to eat the palace food, likely because:
The food was consecrated to idols
It did not accord with the Law
- He asked to eat only vegetables and water, and to be tested for 10 days
- The result? They were healthier and better looking than the others
🎯 Personal holiness is more important than public luxury.
📌 4. The Lord Exalts Them (verses 17–21)
“And to these four young men God gave knowledge and skill…”
- The Lord blessed them with:
Wisdom
Understanding
Daniel even received the ability to understand visions and dreams
- When tested by the king, they were 10 times better than all the wise men of Babylon
- Daniel remained in the palace until the time of Cyrus (meaning: faithful to the end)

→ Daniel and his friends shone in the midst of the darkness of Babylonian culture.
“Live as strangers and pilgrims…”
→ Like Daniel in Babylon, believers live as citizens of God’s kingdom, not of the world.
