1
“If a man takes a woman and becomes her husband, and if afterward he finds no favor in her because he has found some indecency in her, then he shall write her a certificate of divorce, put it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
2
And if she goes out of his house and goes away and becomes another man’s wife,
3
and if the latter husband also hates her, writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband who took her as his wife dies,
4
then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD. You shall not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
5
When a man has just taken a wife, he shall not go out with the army in war, nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free for one year for the sake of his household and to bring joy to the woman he has taken as his wife.”
6
“No one shall take a millstone or the upper millstone as a pledge, for that would be taking a person’s life as a pledge.
7
If a man is found kidnapping one of his brothers from among the Israelites, treating him as a slave, and selling him, then that kidnapper shall die. So you shall purge the evil from among you.
8
Be careful in the matter of leprosy, and do exactly all that the Levitical priests teach you; what I have commanded them, you shall be careful to do.
9
Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the way when you came out of Egypt.
10
When you lend anything to your neighbor, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.
11
You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge out to you.
12
If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge;
13
you shall return the pledge to him at sunset, so that he may sleep in his own garment and bless you. Then you will be righteous before the LORD your God.
14
You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the foreigners in your land, within your gates.
15
On that same day you shall pay him his wages before the sun goes down, for he is poor and sets his heart on it; lest he cry out to the LORD against you, and it become sin for you.
16
Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers; each person shall be put to death for his own sin.
17
You shall not pervert the justice due to the foreigner or the fatherless; nor shall you take a widow’s garment as a pledge.
18
Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this.
19
When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
20
When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the branches again; it shall be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
21
When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it again; it shall be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
22
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this.”
⚖️❤️🌾 Summary of Deuteronomy 24 – Family Law, Workers, and Social Care
Deuteronomy 24 contains legal provisions that emphasize social justice, compassion, and responsibility toward others, especially those who are vulnerable: women, the poor, laborers, and foreigners. These laws show the heart of God in defending the weak and oppressed.
📌 1. Divorce and Remarriage Laws (verses 1–4)
- A man may divorce his wife with a certificate of divorce.
- If the wife marries again and is divorced (or her husband dies), she may not be taken back by her first husband.
- That is considered an abomination before the Lord.
🎯 The Lord values the holiness of marriage and does not allow marriage to be treated as a game or a trivial matter.
📌 2. Military Exemption for Newlyweds (verse 5)
- A man who has just married must not go to war or perform any duty for 1 year.
- The purpose is so that he may bring joy to his wife.
🎯 The Lord cares about new families and the importance of building a household on love and presence.
📌 3. Prohibition on Seizing Tools of Livelihood (verse 6)
- One must not seize a millstone (a tool for grinding food) as security for a debt.
- For it is a tool for earning a living; to seize it is to take a life.
🎯 God desires economic justice without destroying the lives of the poor.
📌 4. Prohibition on Oppressing the Weak (verses 7–15)
- The death penalty for kidnappers among one’s own people.
- Do not treat a person with leprosy carelessly.
- Do not enter a person’s house to take a debt pledge — let him hand it over himself.
- The pledge must be returned before sunset so that the poor person may sleep in peace.
- Pay a day laborer his wages on the same day — because his life depends on it.
🎯 God cares about dignity, time, and the rights of workers — His law is very practical and humane.
📌 5. Justice in Legal and Social Matters (verses 16–22)
- Parents must not be punished for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents.
- Do not pervert justice for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
- Remember Israel’s experience as slaves in Egypt — therefore act justly and generously.
- When harvesting:
If a sheaf of grain is left behind, do not go back for it.
Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
🎯 Social concern is not optional — it is God’s command, and part of true worship.
📖 Main Teaching
- Marriage must be kept in holiness and not made into a game.
- Economic justice must honor the lives of the poor and lowly.
- Day laborers and hired workers must be treated fairly.
- Do not abuse power, even in collecting a debt.
- God’s social law stands with the oppressed: the orphan, the widow, and the foreigner.
- Remember the past and let it be a reason to be generous now.
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
- James 1:27 affirms the form of true worship:
“Pure and undefiled religion before God is to visit orphans and widows…”
- Matthew 25:40 says:
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.”
- This shows that Jesus confirms the principle of the Law’s social justice in the life of Christ’s followers: love and justice for the weak.
🎯 Love for one’s neighbor is not an extra to faith — it is a central part of living faith.
“You must remember that you too were once slaves in Egypt…” – Deuteronomy 24:18
