Do We Have Spiritual Strength?

We often hear about physical muscles that need to be trained to become strong. But what about spiritual muscles? Do we really have a โ€˜spiritual muscleโ€™? And if so, how do we train it?

What Is a โ€˜Spiritual Muscleโ€™?

Literally, of course, we do not have spiritual muscles. But symbolically, this term refers to a person’s inner strength and resilience of faith. โ€˜Spiritual muscleโ€™ is the ability to remain steadfast in faith, patient in trials, quick to forgive, humble in success, and hopeful in difficulties. Just like physical muscles, spiritual muscles do not grow instantly. They require training, and often, that training comes through lifeโ€™s challenges.

Daily Faith Training

Every day is actually a spiritual gym for us.

When we choose to be honest when it is easier to lie, when we forgive when our hearts want to retaliate, or when we remain grateful even though circumstances are not ideal, all of these are exercises. And like physical exercise, spiritual muscles only grow when they are used, stretched, and tested.

James 1:3-4 says, “because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

And let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.โ€

This shows that every trial is actually a spiritual training session, which if endured properly, produces resilient inner strength.

God Is Our Coach

God often allows us to enter situations that activate our โ€˜spiritual muscle.โ€™ It is not because He wants us to suffer, but because He knows our spiritual potential is greater than we imagine.

Romans 5:3-4 affirms that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope.

God is not punishing us when we face difficulties. He is shaping us.

And the training done under His guidance is never in vain.

Don’t Wait Until You Fall to Start Training

One common mistake we make is only drawing near when we are down. In fact, the spiritual muscle is most effective when built daily. Through prayer, reading the Word, serving, and living life according to Christ’s values, we are strengthening our spiritual foundation. So when the storm comes, we do not collapse because we are already accustomed to standing firm.
