Why Do We Often Compare Ourselves?

Have you ever felt inferior when seeing someone else’s achievements? Or suddenly felt better after seeing someone else’s failure? That is a sign that we are comparing ourselves. This phenomenon is very common, but why do we do it, and what is God’s view on this?

The Root of Comparing Ourselves

Psychologically, humans tend to compare themselves to find identity and meaning. We want to know “Who am I?” and “Am I enough or not?” Because of that, we begin to judge ourselves through the eyes of others, whether it is about physical appearance, wealth, achievements, ministry, or even spirituality.

Unfortunately, these comparisons are often unfair. We see others’ success at their peak, then compare it with our failures at our lowest point. This makes us feel defeated, failed, and worthless.

God’s Word: We Are Unique, Not Copies

The Bible is very clear: everyone is created unique. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” God did not create humans as duplicates. Each of us has different roles and paths in His plan.

When we compare ourselves, we are questioning God’s wisdom in creating us.

The parable of the talents in Matthew 25 also teaches a similar lesson. God gives talents not in equal amounts, but He demands faithfulness, not equal quantity. So, His focus is not on “who has more,” but on “are you faithful with what you have.”

The Silent Poison That Erodes Peace

Comparing ourselves not only weakens faith but also steals peace. We become unable to be grateful, unable to be happy for others, and always feel insufficient. Even ministry can be tainted if the motivation is to appear better than others.

Hebrews 12:1 reminds us to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” This means each of us has our own track. Comparing ourselves to other runners will only slow our pace.

Learning to Focus on Our Own Path

The best way to stop the habit of comparing ourselves is by focusing on personal growth with God. Instead of looking left and right, let us learn to look upward and ask: “Lord, what do You want me to do today with what I have?”
