This topic often makes many people doubt and wonder: “Does God hate sinners?” Perhaps because we often hear the phrase “God hates sin,” we unconsciously conclude that He also hates the sinner. But is that really the case?
The Bible never portrays God as someone who hates sinful humans. On the contrary, from the beginning to the end of the Bible, we can see how great God’s love is for humans, including those who have fallen into sin. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This shows that God’s love does not wait for us to be righteous before He loves us.
God Hates Sin, But Loves the Sinner
It is important to distinguish between sin and the sinner. In Proverbs 6:16-19, God indeed expresses hatred toward certain forms of sin such as pride, lying, and shedding innocent blood. But this passage does not say that God personally hates the people who commit them. Sin is something that destroys His creation, the relationship between humans and Him, and also with others. Therefore, God hates sin because of His love for humanity.
The example is very clear in Jesus’ ministry. He sat and ate with tax collectors and sinners (Mark 2:15-17), not to celebrate their sin, but to show that God’s love can reach anyone. Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
God’s Love Drives Repentance
God does not remain silent toward sin. He does not compromise. But His approach is not with hatred, but with transforming love. 2 Peter 3:9 states that God “is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
This is what distinguishes God’s love from the concept of hatred. He does not want anyone to perish. Even John 3:16 affirms that God’s love for the world made Him willing to sacrifice His Son so that people would not perish but have eternal life. So, God’s love is not neutral, but actively works to draw people out of sin.
Conclusion: Hate the Sin, But Still Love the Sinner
God does not hate sinners. He hates sin because sin separates humans from Him. Yet His love is far greater than our fall. He calls everyone to repent, not to be judged without hope, but to be restored and saved.
If today you feel unworthy because of your past or the sins you have committed, remember that God does not close His door. Instead, He extends His hand with love, inviting you to come back home to Him.
