The question “why did God create humans?” is one of the most profound and frequently asked questions in the hearts of many people. Does God feel lonely? Does God need humans? Or is there a greater reason beyond just our existence?
To understand this, we need to look at who God is and how the Bible describes His relationship with His creation.
God created out of love, not out of lack
The Bible says that “God is love” (1 John 4:8). And true love is not selfish. Love wants to give, share, and create something beautiful. God did not create humans because He lacked something or was lonely. In fact, before there was the world and humans, God was already complete in a loving relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (John 17:24).
So when God created humans, it was because He wanted to share His love. We are an expression of His love and glory. Psalm 8:5 even says, “Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.”
Created for relationship, not just existence
Humans are not merely products of creation; we were created for relationship. In Genesis 1:27 it is written that humans were created “in the image and likeness of God.” This means we have the capacity to know and relate to the Creator.
God walked with Adam in the garden (Genesis 3:8). This shows intimacy. He did not just create humans and leave them to live alone. He wants to live with humans, interact, and build a relationship.
To glorify God and enjoy Him forever
The main purpose of human creation can be summarized in a sentence once written in the Westminster Catechism: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” This aligns with Romans 11:36 which says, “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever!”
We were created so that our lives become a reflection of His glory. Through a life of obedience, full of love, and trusting God, we are participating in that great purpose.
Not because He needs us, but because He wants us to exist
God does not need humans. But amazingly, He wants us to exist. That is a big difference. He longs for a relationship with us not because of any emptiness within Himself, but because of His desire to share His love and goodness with us.
Ephesians 1:4-5 says that we were “chosen before the foundation of the world… to be His children.” So, we are not a coincidence. We are part of a loving plan that has been designed since eternity.
