Does Suffering Draw Me Closer to God?

No one wants to experience suffering. Whether it is illness, loss, failure, or the pressures of life, everyone tends to avoid it. Yet in the midst of suffering, many Christians discover something they never experienced in comfortable seasons: a deeper closeness with God. The question is, can suffering really draw us closer to God?

1. Suffering Makes Us Aware of Our Limitations

When life is going smoothly, we often feel we can control everything. But when suffering comes, we are reminded that human beings are weak. Psalm 34:19 says, โ€œThe LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.โ€
In moments when we are helpless, we realize that only God is the true source of strength.

2. Suffering Shapes Character

The Bible never promises a life without suffering, but it emphasizes how God uses suffering to shape us. Romans 5:3-4 says that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
In other words, suffering is not the end, but a process God uses to refine faith and shape character so that we become more like Christ.

3. Suffering Makes Us Hunger More for God

Many people testify that their most earnest prayers were born in difficult seasons. When there is nowhere else to depend on, the human heart seeks God with deeper longing. Psalm 42:2 says, โ€œMy soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?โ€
Suffering often awakens that longing, making us thirst for His presence.

4. Suffering Opens the Way to Experience Godโ€™s Power

Often it is at our lowest point that we see Godโ€™s hand at work in amazing ways. Paul himself said, โ€œFor when I am weak, then I am strongโ€ (2 Corinthians 12:10).
God uses suffering to show that true strength does not come from ourselves, but from His power. A life testimony born from suffering walked through with God will become a blessing to many people.

5. Suffering Reminds Us of Christ

Jesus Himself was no stranger to suffering. He willingly endured pain, rejection, and even death on the cross. When we suffer, we begin to understand a little of what Christ endured for us. Philippians 3:10 speaks of Paulโ€™s longing to know Christ, even in His sufferings.
Thus, suffering not only draws us closer to God, but also makes us more like Christ.

Conclusion

Suffering does not automatically make someone closer to God. What makes the difference is the response of our hearts. Some become bitter and drift away from God because of suffering, but others grow more humble, pray more earnestly, and find God personally in the middle of their struggles.

So, suffering can become a bridge to draw us closer to God if we are willing to respond in faith. Remember the promise in Psalm 34:19, that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Do not let suffering drive us away from God, but let it become an opportunity to know His love, power, and plan more deeply.
