How Can We Stay Thankful in the Midst of Suffering?

Giving thanks when life is full of blessings feels easy. But what about when we experience loss, illness, or life’s pressures? Is it still possible to be thankful? The Bible teaches that a thankful heart does not depend on circumstances, but on our knowledge of God.

1. Remembering That God Is Still Sovereign

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 it is written, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This verse does not say we must give thanks for suffering, but in suffering. That means we give thanks not because of the pain itself, but because we believe God is still in control.
This awareness helps us see that suffering is not the end, but part of the journey of faith.

2. Seeing Suffering as a Means of Growth

Thankfulness becomes possible when we realize that suffering can be used by the Lord to shape our character. Romans 5:3-4 says that suffering produces perseverance, proven character, and hope. So every tear is never wasted, because the Lord is refining our hearts to become stronger and more mature.
With this perspective, suffering is not only a wound, but also a spiritual school that shapes us more and more into the likeness of Christ.

3. Remembering God’s Love and Promises

In the midst of suffering, we easily forget that we are still loved. Yet God’s Word affirms, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
Giving thanks means remembering this promise every day. When the body is weak, when the heart wavers, we can still say: “I am not alone.” Being thankful does not mean the problem disappears, but that our hearts are strengthened by His promise.

4. Learning to See the Small Things Worth Thanking God For

Often suffering makes us focus only on what has been lost. But if we are willing to open our eyes, there are still many small things worth thanking God for: the breath of life, a supportive family, friends who pray, or even just the morning sunlight.
Jesus Himself, in His ministry, gave thanks several times for simple things, such as bread and fish (Matthew 15:36). Being thankful for small things helps us realize God’s love that is truly present every day.

5. Making Prayer a Place of Strength

When suffering presses in, gratitude may not come naturally. Yet through prayer, our hearts are directed back to God. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to present every request with prayer and thanksgiving, and then the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds.
In other words, prayer is not only a way to ask for help, but also a way to train the heart to remain thankful.

Conclusion

Staying thankful in the midst of suffering does not mean pretending not to hurt or denying reality. Thankfulness is a heart attitude that trusts God is greater than our suffering. By remembering His sovereignty, seeing suffering as an opportunity to grow, remembering His promises, valuing small things, and living in prayer, we can say like Job: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).
