The Changing Times and Challenges to God’s Word
Times change rapidly. Culture, technology, and even the way people think continue to evolve. Amid this ever-moving world, some people begin to ask: is the Bible, written thousands of years ago, still relevant? Some even ask further: does the Bible need to be updated to fit the present age?
This question may sound provocative, but it is important to approach it with care and wisdom. Does God’s word really need to be adjusted to the world, or is it the world that should be aligned with God’s word?
God’s Word is Eternal and Unchanging
The Bible itself gives a very clear answer about the nature of God’s word. Psalm 119:89 says, “Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” This shows that God’s word is not bound by time or worldly trends.
Isaiah 40:8 also affirms, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” So, it is not the Bible that needs to be renewed, but the human heart that needs to be renewed in order to understand and live according to the word.
Why Do Many Feel the Bible “Needs to be Updated”?
Many people feel that the contents of the Bible are too “ancient” or do not align with modern views on morality, freedom, and social life. For example, values about marriage, sexuality, or sin often clash with today’s culture. However, this is precisely the challenge: will we adjust the truth to feel comfortable, or allow the truth to shape our lives?
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God…” This means it is not God’s word that is changed, but our minds that are renewed so we can understand His will.
Translation Does Not Mean Renewing the Meaning
It should also be understood that renewing does not mean re-translating. Many modern Bible versions are made to be understood in everyday language without changing the original meaning. This is perfectly acceptable and even important so that new generations can understand the message of God’s word more clearly.
However, renewing the content with the intention of changing its fundamental values or teachings is a different matter. Revelation 22:18-19 gives a stern warning about adding to or taking away from this book. This shows how seriously God guards the purity of His word.
Challenges for Believers Today
In the midst of a rapidly changing world, believers are called to stand firm in the truth. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…” This word remains and will continue to be relevant forever.
Rather than renewing the Bible, what we need is to renew our lives and commitment to obey the living and enduring word of God.
