People are often captivated by what is visible. We easily judge someone by achievements, appearance, position, or success that is seen before our eyes. But God’s Word reminds us that human standards are often different from God’s standards. The Lord does not merely look at what is seen on the outside, but judges the heart within.
When Samuel was looking for Saul’s replacement as king, he was almost impressed by the appearance of David’s older brothers, who were strong and handsome. But the Lord rebuked him: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). This verse reminds us that what matters most to God is the motive and purity of the heart, not outward appearance.
Sadly, we are often quick to feel satisfied or proud when we succeed. We can easily say in our hearts, “I have served more,” or “I am more faithful than others.” But the Bible corrects this attitude. Jesus once spoke about the Pharisees who prayed only to be seen by others (Matthew 6:5). They looked spiritual, but their hearts were full of pride.
In contrast, Jesus praised a tax collector who only dared to bow his head and pray softly, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Sincere humility is more precious in God’s eyes than great achievements filled with pride.
The Lord wants us to learn to serve without seeking recognition, to do good without expecting praise, and to remain faithful without thinking ourselves better than others. What we do should come from a heart that loves God, not merely from a desire to be praised by people. Pride will only cause us to fall, but a humble heart will be lifted up by God.
As it is written, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (James 4:6). So do not be quick to boast about your achievements, because the Lord sees much deeper. What He seeks is a heart that is pure, obedient, and sincere before Him.
Lord, forgive me if I have often been more busy boasting about myself than guarding my heart before You. Teach me to serve humbly, to do everything only for Your glory. May my heart remain pure and faithful before You. Amen.
