No one likes being treated unfairly or opposed by an enemy. It feels much easier to love those who support us, but harder to accept those who hurt us. Yet the Bible shows that God often uses our enemies as instruments to shape us and bring us into His greater plan.
Joseph’s story is a real example. His brothers were jealous, hated him, and sold him as a slave. From a human point of view, it was a bitter betrayal. But from the perspective of faith, God used all of it as a way to save many people from famine. Joseph said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20).
The enemy who wanted to bring Joseph down actually became the bridge that carried him to Egypt, where God’s plan was revealed. God is able to turn evil intentions into channels of blessing.
Jesus taught the same thing. In Matthew 5:44 He said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Why? Because an enemy may be God’s tool to train our hearts, teaching humility, forgiveness, and a love that goes beyond human logic. Without enemies, we might never learn patience, never learn to forgive, and never truly depend on God.
God also often uses enemies to move us out of our comfort zone. Think of David. Without Saul chasing him, David might not have prayed as much, written psalms, or learned to depend fully on God. The pressure from his enemy actually drew him closer to God.
So if today we are facing someone who opposes or hurts us, let us learn to see with eyes of faith. Perhaps they are “God’s instrument” to push us deeper into His plan. Do not rush into bitterness or revenge, because it may be that the enemy we complain about is the path God uses to lift us up.
Lord, I often feel upset and angry toward people who oppose or hurt me. Yet teach me to see that You can use those situations for good. Help me to keep forgiving, loving, and trusting that You are able to turn an enemy into a path of blessing. Amen.
