Many people delay obeying the Lord because they say they are not ready yet. Some say, “When my life is better, I’ll serve,” or, “When my faith is stronger, then I’ll obey.” But true obedience does not wait for every condition to be perfect; it chooses to do God’s will right now.
In the Bible, we see many figures whom God called when they did not yet feel ready. Moses felt he was not eloquent when he was called to lead Israel (Exodus 4:10). Jeremiah felt too young to be a prophet (Jeremiah 1:6). Even Peter felt unworthy when Jesus called him (Luke 5:8-10). Yet God did not wait for them to become perfect first. He called them as they were, then enabled them as they took steps of faith.
Delaying obedience often causes us to miss the opportunity to see God’s miracles. When Abraham was asked to go to a land he had never seen (Genesis 12:1-4), he set out immediately without knowing exactly where he was going. This kind of obedience shows true faith, trusting that God knows the best way, even when we cannot see the whole picture.
Obedience is not about comfort, but about trust. As we step forward, the Holy Spirit is the One who will shape, strengthen, and lead us. Philippians 2:13 says, “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” This means God not only calls, but also gives the ability to obey Him.
So if God has already placed something on our hearts—whether to serve, forgive, begin a spiritual habit, or take a step of faith—do not wait until we feel ready.
Lord, forgive me if I often delay obedience because I feel unable. I want to learn to step out in faith, trusting that the One who calls me will also enable me. Help me to obey now, not later.
