In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, while I was among the exiles by the river Kebar, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

On the fifth day of the month, that is, in the fifth year after King Jehoiachin had been taken into exile,

the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Kebar; and there the hand of the LORD was upon him.

Then I looked, and behold, a storm wind came out of the north, a great cloud with flashing fire and a brightness all around it; and in its midst, within the fire, there was something like glowing metal.

And in the midst of it there was the likeness of four living creatures, and this was how they appeared: they had the likeness of a man,

but each one had four faces, and each of them had four wings.

Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hoofs of a calf; and they sparkled like burnished bronze.

Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, it was like this:

they touched one another with their wings; they did not turn when they went, each one went straight ahead.

Their faces looked like this: each of the four had the face of a man in front, the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left, and the face of an eagle behind.

Their wings were spread upward; two wings of each touched one another, and two covered their bodies.

Each one went straight ahead; wherever the spirit was to go, there they went, and they did not turn when they went.

In the midst of the living creatures there was something like burning coals of fire, like torches, moving back and forth among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and lightning flashed from the fire.

The living creatures darted back and forth like lightning.

As I looked at the living creatures, behold, there was one wheel on the ground beside each of the four living creatures.

The appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of beryl, and all four had the same form; their construction was as if a wheel were within a wheel.
17
When they moved, they could go in any of the four directions; they did not turn when they went.
18
Their rims were high, and I saw that the rims of all four were full of eyes all around.
19
When the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the ground, the wheels were lifted up too.
20
Wherever the spirit was about to go, there they went; and the wheels were lifted up together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
21
When the living creatures went, the wheels went; when they stood still, the wheels stood still; and when they were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up together with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
22
Above the heads of the living creatures there was something like a firmament, appearing like dazzling crystal, stretched out over their heads.

And beneath the firmament their wings were spread out straight, one touching the other; and each one had a pair of wings covering its body.
24
When they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of rushing waters, like the sound of the Almighty, like the noise of a great army; when they stood still, their wings were let down.
25
Then there came a voice from above the firmament that was over their heads; when they stood still, their wings were let down.
26
Above the firmament that was over their heads there was something like a throne, appearing like a sapphire stone; and above what looked like a throne there was what seemed to be the likeness of a man.
27
From what seemed to be his waist upward I saw something like glowing metal, and like fire enclosed all around it; and from what seemed to be his waist downward I saw something like fire surrounded by brightness.
28
Like the bow that appears in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the brightness that surrounded him. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of the one speaking.

Ezekiel 1 opens this prophetic book with a remarkable vision of God’s glory in the midst of Israel’s exile in Babylon. “Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of the One speaking.”
➡️ Ezekiel fell prostrate — the natural response when confronted with God’s holiness
