In the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, write down the date of this day, yes, this very day. On this very day the king of Babylon began to attack Jerusalem.

Speak a parable to the rebellious house and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD:
Put the pot on the fire; put it on,
and also pour water into it;
4
put pieces of meat in it,
all the good pieces, the thigh and the shoulder;
fill it with choice bones.
5
Take the choicest lamb,
and also pile wood beneath it,
let the cooking boil
and let its bones be cooked within it.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the city of bloodshed, the pot whose rust is in it, and whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out piece by piece from it, without choosing.
7
For the blood she has shed is still in her midst; she has poured it out on the bare rock. She did not pour it out on the ground, so that it might be covered with dust.
8
To stir up wrath and to take vengeance, I have set her blood upon the bare rock, so that it should not be covered.
9
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the city of bloodshed! I also will make the pile of wood great.
10
Heap on much wood, kindle the fire, let the meat be well cooked, and pour out the broth, and let the bones be burned.
11
Then set the pot empty upon the coals, so that it may be heated and its bronze may become red-hot, that its filth may be melted within it and its rust consumed.
12
I have wearied myself with toil, yet its thick rust will not go out of it, even in the fire.
13
Because you have defiled yourself with your lewdness, and I would have cleansed you, but you were not cleansed from your filth, you shall not be cleansed again until I have satisfied my wrath upon you.
14
I, the LORD, have spoken it. It shall come, and I will do it. I will not hold back, nor will I spare, nor will I relent. I will judge you according to your ways, declares the Lord GOD.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a sudden blow; yet you shall not mourn or weep, and your tears shall not flow.
17
Sigh quietly; make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head and put your sandals on your feet; do not cover your face, and do not eat the bread of mourning.”
18
In the morning I spoke to the people, and in the evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I had been commanded.
19
Then the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what this means for us, that you are doing this?”
20
Then I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me:

Say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes and the longing of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.
22
You shall do as I have done: you shall not cover your face, nor eat the bread of mourning,
23
your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep. But you shall waste away in your iniquities, and you shall groan one to another.
24
Thus Ezekiel shall be a sign to you; according to all that he has done, you shall do. When this comes to pass, then you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
25
And you, son of man, will it not be so on the day when I take from them their stronghold, the joy of their glory, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their soul, their sons and their daughters,

on that day a fugitive will come to you with the news.
27
On that day your mouth will be opened, and you shall speak with the fugitive, and you shall no longer be mute. So you shall be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.”

Ezekiel 24 marks the day the siege of Jerusalem by Babylon began (around 588 BC). God gives two great symbolic messages:
- The parable of the boiling pot symbolizing judgment on Jerusalem
- The death of Ezekiel’s wife, as a prophetic sign without mourning
This chapter shows the depth of God’s wrath against sin, and at the same time the full demand for a prophet’s obedience.

➡️ God told Ezekiel to record the date: “today the king of Babylon began to besiege Jerusalem”

➡️ The Lord said that Ezekiel’s wife would die suddenly, “the delight of your eyes”

➡️ This is a symbol that the people of Israel would not have time to mourn when Jerusalem is destroyed
➡️ Ezekiel became a living sign of warning for the people of Israel

➡️ The Lord said: when the news of Jerusalem’s fall reaches them, Ezekiel will be free to speak again
➡️ Until then Ezekiel had spoken much in parables; from then on he would speak openly
