Then the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, say to the king of Tyre: Thus says the Lord GOD:
Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said, ‘I am God!
I sit on the throne of God in the midst of the seas.’
Yet you are a man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God.

Indeed, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you.
4
By your wisdom and your understanding you have gained riches.
You have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries.
5
By your great skill in trade you have increased your riches, and because of this your heart is proud.
6
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have set your heart as the heart of God,
7
therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners against you, the most ruthless of the nations; they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they shall defile your splendor.
8
They shall bring you down to the pit, and you shall die the death of those slain in the midst of the seas.
9
Will you still say before the one who kills you, ‘I am God’?
Yet you are a man, and not God, in the hand of those who pierce you.
10
You shall die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of foreigners.
For I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him: Thus says the Lord GOD:
You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13
You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: ruby, topaz, and green jasper, turquoise, chrysoprase, and nephrite, lapis lazuli, bloodstone, and malachite.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold; they were prepared on the day you were created.
14
I placed you with the anointed cherub who guards; you were on the holy mountain of God, and you walked among the stones of fire.
15
You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you.
16
By the greatness of your trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned.
So I cast you as profane from the mountain of God, and the guardian cherub drove you out from among the stones of fire.
17
Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to be a spectacle to their eyes.
18
By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade, you profaned your sanctuaries.
So I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you.
And I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you.
19
All among the nations who knew you are appalled at your fate.
The end of your life is dreadful, and you are gone forever.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, set your face toward Sidon, and prophesy against it
22
and say, Thus says the Lord GOD:
Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will show my glory in your midst.
And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I execute judgments upon her and show my holiness in her.
23
For I will send pestilence upon her, and blood shall flow in her streets, and the slain shall fall in her midst by the sword that comes against her from every side.
And they shall know that I am the LORD.
24
And there shall no longer be for the house of Israel among all their neighbors who despise them a pricking thorn or a painful brier.
And they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
25
Thus says the Lord GOD:
When I gather the house of Israel from among the peoples where they have been scattered, and I show my holiness among them in the sight of the nations, then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob.
26
They shall dwell there in safety and peace; they shall build houses and plant vineyards.
Yes, they shall dwell in safety and peace when I execute judgments on all their neighbors who despise them.
And they shall know that I am the LORD, their God.

Ezekiel 28 is a continuation of the prophecy against Tyre, this time directed specifically at the king of Tyre, portraying human pride that considers itself equal to God. In this section there is also a prophecy against Sidon, Tyre’s neighboring city, as well as a promise of restoration for Israel. The king of Tyre is made a symbol of a fallen devil, because his perfection was misused to exalt himself.
