1
Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, speak to your countrymen and say to them: If I bring the sword against a land, and the people of that land take one man from among them and appoint him as their watchman,
3
and if he sees the sword coming against his land and blows the trumpet to warn the people,
4
then if anyone hears the sound of the trumpet but will not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head.
5
He heard the sound of the trumpet, but he would not take warning; his blood shall be on his own head. If he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.
6
But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes one of them away, that person is taken away because of his own guilt, but I will require his blood from the watchman.
7
And you, son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them in My name.
8
If I say to the wicked, ‘Wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked man to turn from his way, that wicked man shall die in his guilt, but I will require his blood from you.
9
But if you warn the wicked man to turn from his way, and he does not turn from it, he shall die in his guilt, but you have saved your life.
10
And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel: You say this: Our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and because of them we are wasting away; how then can we live?
11
Say to them: As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?
12
And you, son of man, say to your countrymen: The righteousness of the righteous will not save him when he falls into transgression, and the wickedness of the wicked will not cause him to stumble when he turns from his wickedness; and the righteous will not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins.
13
If I say to the righteous, ‘You shall surely live,’ but he trusts in his righteousness and does wrong, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered, and he shall die in the wrongdoing he has done.
14
And if I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ but he turns from his sin and does what is just and right,
15
if the wicked restores the pledge, pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks in the statutes that give life, and does no wrong, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
16
None of the sins he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is just and right, and he shall surely live.
17
Yet your countrymen say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right!’ But it is their way that is not right.
18
When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does wrong, he shall die for it.
19
And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live because of it.
20
Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right!’ I will judge you, each one according to his conduct, O house of Israel.”
21
In the eleventh year after our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has been taken!”
22
Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me the evening before the man who had escaped came, and the LORD opened my mouth by the time he came to me in the morning. My mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Son of man, those who live among these ruins in the land of Israel say, ‘Abraham was only one man when he received the land as his possession, but we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’
25
Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: You eat meat with the blood, you lift up your eyes to your idols, and you shed blood—should you then possess the land?
26
You rely on your sword, you commit abominations, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife—should you then possess the land?’
27
Say this to them: ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, those who are in the ruins shall fall by the sword, and those who are in the open country I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and caves shall die by pestilence.」
28
This land I will make desolate and a waste, and its pride, which is sustained by its strength, shall come to an end; the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, so that no one will dare to pass through them.
29
And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I make the land desolate and a waste, because of all their abominable deeds that they have done.
30
And you, son of man, your countrymen are talking about you beside the walls and at the doors of the houses, and saying one to another, each to his neighbor, “Come now and hear what the LORD has spoken!”
31
And they come to you as people gather, and sit before you as my people; they hear what you say, but they do not do it. Their mouth is full of words of love, but their heart goes after unjust gain.
32
Indeed, you are to them like one who sings a song of love with a pleasant voice and who plays skillfully on the harp; they hear what you say, but they do not do it at all.
33
When it comes — and surely it will come! — then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
