There are seasons in spiritual life when everything feels dry. Worship songs no longer touch the heart. Prayer feels like an empty monologue. Reading the Bible does not bring comfort like before. It seems as if the presence of God has vanished, even though we desperately need His strength. Moments like these are called spiritual dry seasons โ and almost every believer has experienced or will experience them.
Are you there today?
The first question that often arises at this time is, “Am I far from God?” or more sharply, “Is God distancing Himself from me?” The answer can be quite surprising: Not always.
God Has Not Disappeared, Our Feelings Have Changed
God never leaves us. In Hebrews 13:5 God promises, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” But our feelings can be very deceptive. Just as the sun continues to shine even when the sky is covered with clouds, God’s presence does not depend on what we feel. He remains, even when we cannot sense Him.
In Psalm 42:6, David says, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God!” This is the outpouring of someone who is in a spiritual dry season, yet chooses to keep hoping.
Why Does God Allow the Season of Spiritual Dryness to Happen?
- To deepen our faith. If our faith only lasts when our feelings are “lifted,” then it is not mature faith. In 2 Corinthians 5:7 it says, “For we live by faith, not by sight.”
- To shift focus from emotions to truth. God wants us to stand on His word, not just our feelings. Feelings can fluctuate, but God’s word remains eternal.
- To train us to endure. Like muscles trained through hardship, our faith also grows when tested. Romans 5:3-4 teaches that suffering produces perseverance, and perseverance produces character.
What Should You Do When Experiencing a Season of Spiritual Dryness?
- Keep coming to God. Donโt run away. Even if it feels empty, keep praying, keep reading the word. Because that is how we stay connected to Him.
- Pray for honesty. Tell God how it really is. “Lord, I feel You are far away. I long for You.” God values honest prayer. Psalm 62:9 says, “Pour out your heart before Him.”
- Remember Godโs goodness in the past. Psalm 77:12 says, “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.”
- Build discipline, not dependence on mood. When we remain faithful even when we feel nothing, that is where true love is proven.
Conclusion: The Season of Dryness Is Not the End, But a Pause to Grow
God never plays hide and seek with us. When He feels far away, often it is an opportunity for us to grow in faith and learn to trust without having to see or feel. The season of dryness is not rejection, but training. Not a curse, but an invitation to know Him more deeply.
Believe, He is still there. And this season will pass, bringing your faith to a place stronger than before.
