Often we think that to be used by God, we must be great, smart, highly capable, or famous. Yet the Bible shows something different. God is not looking for the most impressive, but for a heart that is willing to obey.
Let’s look at Moses. When God called him from the burning bush, Moses felt unworthy. He said, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). Moses even argued that he was “slow of speech” (Exodus 4:10). But God still chose him, not because of his greatness, but because of God’s great plan for his life. In the end, even Moses’ faltering obedience was still used by God to part the sea, give the law, and lead the nation of Israel.
The same was true with David. When Samuel was looking for a new king for Israel, all of David’s older brothers seemed stronger, more impressive, and more worthy. But God said to Samuel, “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). David was only a simple young shepherd, but his heart was obedient and loved God. From this we learn that obedience is more valuable than outward appearance or great achievements.
Jesus also emphasized this. He praised a poor widow who put two small coins into the temple offering, because she gave out of her poverty, not out of her abundance (Mark 12:43-44). For Jesus, it is not a large amount or an impressive appearance that matters, but a heart that truly wants to obey and surrender.
Obedience does not always look spectacular. Sometimes it is only a small step, like forgiving someone who has hurt us, remaining faithful in prayer even when we have not yet seen an answer, or telling the truth when there is an opportunity to lie. Yet it is these small steps of obedience that shape a great testimony in our lives.
God values obedience more than greatness. For when we obey, it is God’s power that works through us. When we feel weak, that is exactly when His power is made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9).
So do not wait until you feel great before you are willing to serve God. Begin with a heart that is willing to obey, no matter how small the step may be. Because with a heart willing to obey, God can do great things we never imagined.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You are not looking for the great, but for a heart that is willing to obey. Help me to remain faithful, even when my steps are small. Use my life according to Your plan, and let my obedience bring glory to Your name. Amen.
