Everyone has a past. Some are filled with wounds, some with failures, and some are so dark they are hard to tell. But the good news is Jesus is able to forgive and restore anyone who comes to Him with a repentant heart. The story of Mary Magdalene is a remarkable proof of that.
The Bible records that Mary Magdalene had once been possessed by seven demons before Jesus healed her (Luke 8:2). That means she lived in suffering and was not free. But when she met Jesus, everything changed. Jesus not only delivered her from the power of darkness, but also restored her identity. From one who was bound, Mary became a faithful follower.
Mary Magdalene became an important witness of Jesus’ ministry. She was there when Jesus was crucified (Mark 15:40), she was present when Jesus was buried, and amazingly, she was the first person to see the risen Jesus (John 20:16-18). Imagine, a woman who once lived in bondage was chosen by God to be the first witness of the resurrection that changed the history of the world.
The story of Mary Magdalene reminds us that God’s forgiveness does not stop at removing sin, but also brings restoration and a new purpose. God does not only lift us out of the mud of sin, but also places us on a new path to live for Him.
Perhaps we feel unworthy because of a past full of mistakes. But God’s Word says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). That means, God does not judge us based on our past, but based on Christ’s work on the cross.
Like Mary Magdalene, we are also called to be faithful after receiving forgiveness. Our restored lives are not meant to return to the old ways, but to become witnesses of God’s love and power. From broken people, we are made messengers of hope for the world.
If today we feel weak or unworthy, remember Mary Magdalene. If God could lift her up, then He can lift us up too. What God seeks is not a perfect past, but a heart willing to receive His love and keep walking in His restoration.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You are the God who forgives and restores. Help me to believe that my past no longer defines who I am. Let me live faithfully, becoming a witness of Your love and power like Mary Magdalene. Amen.
