Many people think that spiritual growth only happens through big moments: mighty miracles, grand ministry, or extraordinary spiritual experiences. Yet in the Bible we see that the Lord cares deeply about small things. True growth often does not happen in the spotlight, but in steady faithfulness in little matters.
Jesus Himself affirmed the importance of small things in Luke 16:10, “Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much.” This means that our spirituality is built not from grand events, but from ordinary daily choices: choosing to speak honestly when no one is watching, greeting others with love when the heart is weary, or setting aside five minutes to meditate on the Word in the middle of busyness.
The Lord does not overlook small things. In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus noticed the offering of a poor widow. She gave only two small coins, yet she was praised because of her heart. The world may not have seen its value, but the Lord saw the depth of the motive behind that simple act.
The same is true in our lives. Sometimes we feel like we have failed to grow because we have not done anything great. But in truth, every small step toward God is a very meaningful form of growth. Holding back from anger, choosing to forgive, or praying in silence—all of these enlarge our hearts’ capacity to love God more deeply.
Spiritual growth is not a race, but a journey. Even a great tree begins as a tiny, unseen seed. In Isaiah 61:3, God is described as growing His people into “oaks of righteousness,” and that does not happen in a day. So do not underestimate five minutes of quiet time, a simple word of thanksgiving, or a small ministry that feels insignificant. It is precisely there that God shapes our character.
Today, let us value the process of growing through small things. Maybe others do not see it, maybe the world does not appreciate it, but God never overlooks it. Lord, teach me not to ignore small matters. Help me to be faithful in the simple steps You entrust to me, and let every small thing I do become part of Your great plan. Amen.
