In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: This people says, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD!’

Then the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai, saying:

“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this House remains a ruin?

Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways!

You have sown much, but brought in little; you eat, but not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but not enough to be filled; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and the one who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes!

Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways!

Go up to the hill country, bring wood, and build the House, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified there, says the LORD.

You looked for much, but behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the LORD of hosts. Because of My house that remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10
Therefore the heavens have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce,
11
and I have called for a drought upon the land, upon the mountains, upon the grain, upon the new wine, upon the oil, upon whatever the ground brings forth, upon man and beast, and upon all the labor of your hands.”

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the rest of the people listened to the voice of the LORD their God, and to the words of Haggai the prophet, according to what the LORD their God had sent him to speak; and the people feared the LORD.

Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the LORD’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you,” declares the LORD.

The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the rest of the people, and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

🛠️⛪🌧️ Summary of Haggai 1 – Rise and Build the House of the LORD!
Haggai 1 highlights the LORD’s rebuke to the people of Judah who returned from exile but delayed rebuilding the Temple. While they were busy building their own houses, the House of the LORD was left neglected. The LORD responds to this neglect with a crisis of blessing and calls for change.
📌 1. Rebuke: “The time has not yet come?” (verses 1–4)
- The word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel (civil leader) and Joshua (high priest).
- The people said:
“The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.”
- But the LORD rebuked them:
“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house remains in ruins?”

- The LORD told them:
“Consider your ways!”
- They worked hard, but the results were little:
“You sow much, but bring in little… you eat, but never have enough…”
- The LORD withheld His blessing — the heavens gave no rain, and the earth produced no harvest.
- Why? Because the house of the LORD was left neglected, while each person was busy with his own house.

- Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the people feared the LORD and listened to His voice.
- The LORD gave a promise:
“I am with you.” (verse 13)
- They began work on the house of the LORD on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.
