(2-2) in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai, saying:

(2-3) “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying:

(2-4) Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Is it not in your eyes as nothing?

(2-5) Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD; be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest; be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD; and work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts,

(2-6) according to the promise that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear!

(2-7) For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land;

(2-8) I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.

(2-9) The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of hosts.

(2-10) The glory of this house, the latter glory, shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.”

(2-11) On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai, saying:

(2-12) “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests for instruction.

(2-13) If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the fold touches bread or stew or wine or oil or any food, does it become holy?” The priests answered and said, “No!”

(2-14) Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean!”

(2-15) Then Haggai answered and said, “So it is with this people, and with this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and with all the work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

(2-16) “Now then, consider from this day onward! Before stone was placed upon stone for the building of the house of the LORD,

(2-17) how are you? When people went to look at a heap of grain that should have been twenty measures, there were only ten; and when people went to the winepress to draw out fifty measures, there were only twenty.

(2-18) I struck you with blight and mildew and with hail all the work of your hands; yet you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.

(2-19) Consider from this day onward — from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. From the day the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid, consider

(2-20) whether seed is still left in the storehouse, and whether the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. From this day I will bless you!”

(2-21) Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying:

(2-22) “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: I will shake the heavens and the earth

(2-23) and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and I will overturn the chariots and those who ride in them; the horses and their riders shall fall, each by the sword of his brother.

(2-24) On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant — declares the LORD — and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.”
🕊️🌟⛪ Summary of Haggai 2 – Greater Glory Is Yet to Come
This chapter contains three messages from God through the prophet Haggai to His people: encouragement not to fear, a promise of new glory, a rebuke to live in holiness, and blessing upon obedience.
📌 1. Comfort: Do Not Fear! (verses 1–9)
- God spoke to Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the people as they began to build.
- God knew they were discouraged because the splendor of the new Temple did not compare with the old one (Solomon’s Temple).
“Who among you saw this house in its former glory? Now… is it not as nothing in your eyes?” (verse 3)
- God strengthened them:
“Be strong… I am with you… My Spirit remains among you.” (verses 4–5)
- God promised:
“I will shake all nations… and I will fill this house with glory!” (verses 6–7)
“The glory of this house later will be greater than its former glory.” (verse 9)
🎯 The Lord does not look at the grandeur of a building — He looks at obedience, and His presence makes all things glorious.
📌 2. A Call to Holiness (verses 10–19)
- The Lord gives an illustration about holiness and uncleanness from the Law:
“Holiness is not contagious, but uncleanness is.”
- The point is: even though they are building the house of the Lord, if their lives are unclean, the Lord is not pleased.
- Yet the Lord said:
“Consider from this day onward… from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month… is the seed still in the barn?… But from this day on, I will bless you.” (verses 18–19)
🎯 Blessing comes not because of outward ritual, but because of a renewed heart and true obedience.
📌 3. The Promise to Zerubbabel (verses 20–23)
- The Lord gives a personal message to Zerubbabel:
“I will shake the heavens and the earth… I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms…” (verses 21–22)
- The Lord calls Zerubbabel:
“My servant… my signet ring.” (verse 23)
🎯 Zerubbabel is chosen as a symbol of God’s authority and a foreshadowing of the Messiah to come.
